CHILD DIARRHEAL DISEASE IN HAITI
Haiti struggles with highest child mortality ratio in the Americas, and is ranked higher in child mortality than many sub-Saharan African countries. The overall CMR in 2012 was 76 deaths/1000 live births. Eleven percent of these under 5 deaths in Haiti was attributable to diarrheal disease. You work for UNICEF and are trying to convince your superiors to launch a fundraising campaign to specifically tackle diarrheal disease in Haiti. Prepare a short brief on the child diarrheal disease situation in Haiti USING THE ELEMENTS LISTED BELOW. If possible, address which particular diarrheal pathogens are responsible for most of the diarrheal cases, and whether there are preventive measures for these pathogens (e.g. vaccines). In your brief, include vaccine and other preventive recommendations, and recommendations for treatments or supportive therapies that will reduce the child mortality from diarrheal disease in Haiti. 5) Past prevention efforts, in the region or globally as relevant – highlighting past success or failures that seem relevant for this context.
6) Policy Recommendations – Propose strategies for how the situation should be handled moving forward. These should be stated as policy recommendations that the Country should adopt that are relevant for their population.
