Course Project Part A

Course Project Part A is due. Please see the instructions in the Course Project item under Course Home, as well as the Excel spreadsheet located in Doc Sharing. Also, please visit the related discussion area in Week 5.

COURSE PROJECT A INSTRUCTIONS
You have just been hired as a new management trainee by Earrings Unlimited, a distributor of earrings to various retail outlets located in shopping malls across the country. In the past, the company has done very little in the way of budgeting and at certain times of the year has experienced a shortage of cash.
Since you are well trained in budgeting, you have decided to prepare comprehensive budgets for the upcoming second quarter in order to show management the benefits that can be gained from an integrated budgeting program. To this end, you have worked with accounting and other areas to gather the information assembled below.
The company sells many styles of earrings, but all are sold for the same price—$10 per pair. Actual sales of earrings for the last three months and budgeted sales for the next six months follow (in pairs of earrings):
“See attachment ”
The concentration of sales before and during May is due to Mother’s Day. Sufficient inventory should be on hand at the end of each month to supply 40% of the earrings sold in the following month.
Suppliers are paid $4 for a pair of earrings. One-half of a month’s purchases is paid for in the month of purchase; the other half is paid for in the following month. All sales are on credit, with no discount, and payable within 15 days. The company has found, however, that only 20% of a month’s sales are collected in the month of sale. An additional 70% is collected in the following month, and the remaining 10% is collected in the second month following sale. Bad debts have been negligible.
Monthly operating expenses for the company are given below:

Insurance is paid on an annual basis, in November of each year.
The company plans to purchase $16,000 in new equipment during May and $40,000 in new equipment during June; both purchases will be for cash. The company declares dividends of $15,000 each quarter, payable in the first month of the following quarter.
A listing of the company’s ledger accounts as of March 31 is given below:
“See Attachment”

The company maintains a minimum cash balance of $50,000. All borrowing is done at the beginning of a month; any repayments are made at the end of a month.
The company has an agreement with a bank that allows the company to borrow in increments of $1,000 at the beginning of each month. The interest rate on these loans is 1% per month and for simplicity we will assume that interest is not compounded. At the end of the quarter, the company would pay the bank all of the accumulated interest on the loan and as much of the loan as possible (in increments of $1,000), while still retaining at least $50,000 in cash.
Required:
Prepare a master budget for the three-month period ending June 30. Include the following detailed budgets:
• 1.
o a. A sales budget, by month and in total.
o b. A schedule of expected cash collections from sales, by month and in total.
o c. A merchandise purchases budget in units and in dollars. Show the budget by month and in total.
o d. A schedule of expected cash disbursements for merchandise purchases, by month and in total.
• 2. A cash budget. Show the budget by month and in total. Determine any borrowing that would be needed to maintain the minimum cash balance of $50,000.
• 3. A budgeted income statement for the three-month period ending June 30. Use the contribution approach.
• 4. A budgeted balance sheet as of June 30.

Choose ONE contemporary communication technology (Facebook) and discuss the co-constitution of its development from its initial design to its eventual adoption and use.

The contemporary communication technology in this essay is “Facebook”.
It should talk about how particular communication technologies are biased (or predisposed) toward specific forms of cultural development. That is to say, a given technology may possess a set of characteristics that facilitate the reorganization of society in a certain way. However, human agency is still a necessary component of any technology. In using a technology, users may apply their own values and practices to arrive at outcomes that were not envisioned by the technology’s designers. Choose ONE contemporary communication technology (Facebook) and discuss the co-constitution of its development from its initial design to its eventual adoption and use. Be sure to highlight the freedoms and limits of human agency in the description of the technology’s development.

Thesis should be something like ……how Facebook has turned from social network (people can make more friends on Facebook) into some kind of politics promotion platform.

Example:
Protesters make event page on Facebook as a promotional platform
People can post political status on Facebook freely; therefore, Mainland China has blocked Facebook in China.
Egypt Internet revolution: use Facebook page to bring attention

*use the examples above to support the thesis
*provide introduction, body paragraph, subtitles, and conclusion
*arial 12 pt, 1inch margins

Pay for Performance (Employee Incentive Program) Systems within the Sandwich Industry

“You cannot “just start working on a topic” until you have first read about the current best practices, at the best firms. Being an expert means reading subject matter books and business articles and talking to experts outside of your organization. Focus on business articles that exclusively cover your specific topic, which is developing a pay for performance system (also known as an employee incentive program). Provide a listing of what you read, whom you interviewed, and what best practices you have identified at all other firms. Convince me that you know which top firms also share this problem and that you identified “what works” and “what doesn’t work” at other firms. Do not include any academic references.”
—– This would be the clip from our research notes to follow above

For this paper, our firm (a sandwich shop chain) desires to create a pay for performance system (or employee incentive program). In order to create a viable employee incentive program, we need to learn about the best in the business who are similar to our company. Most notably in order would be: Subway, McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Carl’s Jr., Five Guys (Burgers and Fries), Quizno’s Sub, and IN-N-Out Burger.

McDonald’s and Subway should have much more information, so please choose the best sandwich industry chains after these two that will have great detail on pay for performance systems or employee incentive programs. The information can explain the incentives/benefits given to non-exempt employees and exempt employees (corporate). Explain what does work, and what doesn’t work. Examples may be employee lotteries/raffles for rewards, rewards for monthly attendance, etc. Please use sub-titles for each company and where appropriate. Less detailed items like certain benefits can be bullet pointed, yet make sure anything in bullet points has an explanation that is needed.

Following the description of each restaurant’s employee incentive program, please state the company goal for labor % and cost of goods % if you can find this information. If companies give rewards for meeting quantitative goals, please list them and the reward amount/item. Calling stores and asking for managers may help if you let them know you are working on a research project. Some managers may not want to give out such information, but would be happy to explain employee incentive programs to some extent.

Please take this topic if you’re serious and go in depth for the research with research from mainly business articles (text and online both fine), books, and interviews (calling managers at locations for information). Writers who do a great job will have an opportunity to receive further papers around this area of management as I will recommend writer ID’s for moderate to larger projects if you would like the opportunity as a way to show appreciation for doing great work.

Once more, the topic of this is pay for performance systems. Please only choose this if you are clear on the topic. This will require the need to call these restaurants to ask about incentive programs and metrics for labor and cost of goods percentages. Please cite any interviews clearly and use California businesses in San Francisco for contacts.

Exploring Marriage & Family

“Throughout the semester we have been exploring the socio-historical construction of marriage and family in class and in course readings. You are expected to take course ideas out of the classroom and utilize them to see the world more sociologically. In order to help with this process you are assigned to locate three examples of messages or statements (advertisements, slogans, media, etc.) about an aspect of family life outside of class and analyze them sociologically.

In your everyday life you enter in and out of literally thousands of varied social contexts. And in these contexts often you are being taught indirect lessons about the social world. These lessons may be visible to us and we willing absorb them, but other times they may be invisible and we unconsciously take them into us and make them part of our lives without directly acknowledging that we learned something.

This assignment requires you to explore varied social contexts in which you are directly or indirectly provided with lessons about family. Below you can find a list of “sites” for you to sociologically explore and analyze. From this list you should choose three, sociologically explore them, and then respond to the five analysis questions in a minimum of one page double spaced (12pt font) per example.

Grading:

You will be graded on completeness, sociological relevance and engagement. You should include relevant course terminology in your analysis, and you should highlight (bold/underline) course concepts or key sentences.

Possible Examples for Exploration:

You should choose 3 different examples (not categories — specific sites) for exploration. You can choose to locate images from the list that I provide below, but I also encourage you to explore images that you think are important or relevant (just check in with the instructor for approval example).

Comparing a 1950/60s TV show to a contemporary show where family is the main theme
Magazines — articles, advertisements
Children’s Books — gender presentations, family type/s presented
Music (songs/videos)
Movies (particularly Disney)
Social Networking Sites (Blogs/FB, etc.)
Television advertisements
Public Policy — e.g. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell; recent transgender school policy and law
News Articles
Stickers on cars
Billboards
T-Shirts
Doctor’s visit
other examples where a message about family, partnership, marriage, or related gender roles is stated, shown, or implied
Analysis Questions

As you explore each example you select, you should consider the following questions. Responding to these questions may be more or less challenging depending on what you decide to study, but you should be able to provide some good sociological discussion and analysis of even the most subtle things – often the most subtle messages you see in these sites will be the most fun to analyze. You will definitely need to utilize some critical thinking skills as you think through and respond to the questions, but hopefully this will be fun.

1) Please describe the specific example that you’re analyzing. Please include any pictures or text that might be helpful for your readers to understanding what you are exploring.

2) In what ways is this example conveying a message about the definition of family or marriage or gendered relationships? How might it be presenting us with a definition of family? Explain.

3) What social values might someone directly or indirectly learn from the message? Explain how.

4) Imagine if everyone believed they had to subscribe to or follow this definition or these values that are be conveyed – what might be some possible positive and negative consequences or outcomes?

5) Also, please discuss any other intellectual or sociological insights that you think are interesting or relevant that you didn’t get a chance to address in the above questions.

Example

For an example of this type of analysis, see Erin Lew’s blog (http://erinlew.wordpress.com). Each of Erin’s “artifacts” (scroll down a bit on Erin’s page) is an example for analysis. Erin’s analyses are brief (yours will be longer with additional detail) but act as a good example of this assignment in general. Another site to check out examples linked here — Sociological Images.

 What role that the headmasters and teachers should play to facilitate ICT implementation in Saudi secondary schools?

Research problem

The Saudi government has realized the importance of investing in the education sector, especially in the youth sector; the huge investments have been dedicated by Saudi government to the purpose of developing public education. For example, in 2007 the Saudi government invested almost £2bn in reforming and improving education using modern technologies. Furthermore, public education was improved by revising the curriculum and introducing electronic devices to facilitate teaching. This project also introduced training and development programmes for educators to ensure sufficient use of ICT in education (Tatweer, 2007). Therefore, more than 25% of the overall Saudi’s government budget for 2013 is dedicated to the educational sector( more than £34 billion), which adds to the already massive funds pumped into the educational field towards the implementation of technology in the school curriculum and improving ICT facilities (Al-Eqtisadiah, 2013).

However, In spite of this increased spending and governmental support, Saudi Arabia still lags behind world leaders in the educational sector especially with regards to ICT (Ashka, 2013). There is still a big gap between the availability of ICT technology in Saudi schools and methods of implementation, and there are still many improvements needed to reach an effective implementation of ICT in Saudi classrooms. To confirm that, some recent studies related to ICT in Saudi secondary schools (Almalki & Williams, 2012; Oyaid, 2009; Almadhour, 2010) mentioned that the Saudi government needs to develop an effective strategy for ICT in education and implement it in practice in Saudi schools. Almadhour (2010) concluded in his study, ‘Unfortunately although the Saudi Arabian government has lots of funding, there is no clear strategic framework towards equipping ICT in schools’.
