Analytical Assignment AKA the Märchen Assignment:

AKA the Märchen Assignment:
The purpose of this assignment is to get you to use the tools that have been employed by folklorists
for the cross-cultural study of Märchen. When it is completed, hopefully you will have acquired
both an appreciation for some of the methods of folklore scholarship and concerns about the
adequacy of these methods for fully discussing a piece of oral narrative.
1. Select one of the Märchen presented in the first three sections of Folk and Fairy Tales

Theoretical and Ethical basis of practice paper

For this assignment, you will be further defining your Phenomenon of Interest within a theoretical and ethical framework. The same Phenomenon of Interest (POI) identified in your first written paper should also be used for this assignment. You will begin this paper by providing a concise description of your POI, this information should be a short summary of information your presented in your first paper.

Next, you will discuss the Fawcett’s Meta-paradigm of Nursing and relate the paradigm directly to your POI. Which of the four concepts does your POI involve? One? More than one? You should support this section with peer reviewed references as appropriate. Specifically identify the components of the meta-paradigm within your discussion.

Then, you will select both a Grand nursing theory as well as a Middle range nursing theory. Take time to review several examples of each type of theory as the selected theories need to “fit” your POI…and work well together.

Grand theory discussion: identify and discuss the inter-related concepts from your selected theory. What aspects of the nursing meta-paradigm are addressed by your grand theory? Then provide information about how you will view your POI through the lens of the grand theory. How does the theory guide your assessment of the POI? How does the theoretical framework chosen categorize or define your POI? How does the theoretical framework effect your perception of the POI?

Middle range theory discussion: identify and discuss the inter-related concepts within the middle range theory. What aspect of the nursing meta-paradigm are addressed in the mid-range theory? How will this theory guide your assessment/perception of the POI? How does this mid range theory relate to your grand theory?

Complexity science: how does complexity science relate to your POI? Depending on the nature of your POI, this conversation may have different foci for different students. For example, if your POI is glycemic management of the peri-operative patient, this discussion would center on the complex responses of the human body as a Complex Adaptive System. If your POI is focused on a policy change issue, the focus may be on organizational complexities with communication, change, etc.

Ethical framework: you should discuss your specific POI in the context of ethical principles. Basic principles include autonomy, justice, beneficence, and non-maleficence. Is your POI in violation of a core ethical principle? Is it possible it may be in violation? What ethical principles do you need to be sure to safeguard?

Conclusion: this section should not contain any new information but should only provide a summary of what what discussed in the paper.

A few important points:

Since you are going to be discussing theories within this paper, it is very important to provide the PRIMARY source when referencing the theory either in text and on the reference list. Who wrote the theory? And when was it published? Answer those questions and that is who the citation should be. For example, Roger’s theory of unitary beings should be cited to Rogers, not to a text book or journal article that discusses the theory.
This is a scholarly assignment which means it should be liberally referenced with peer reviewed literature. Support what you say with evidence from the literature. There is no “hard and fast” rule for the number of references to include, but for an assignment of this magnitude, I would say that 10-12 references would be a minimum. There a number of potential references provided for you in the Required readings and resources of this Lesson’s Unit. This should be a great start, but searching the literature for further resources is also going to be required.

The phenomenon of interest of my previous paper is “diabetic patients and their non compliance with their insulin treatment.”
Please do not write this paper in the third person. I will provide the rubric and references to help with this paper. Please use APA format and use scholarly peer reviewed journals.

Assessment 4
Research Report
!
Marks: 35%

Length: 2,200 – 2,500 words

Due Date: Draft Report due in class in Week 13

Time Management Report due in Week 14

Final Research Report due Week 14
Submission: Bring Draft Report to Week 13 workshop to be marked. Submit Final
Report & attached signed scanned cover sheet as PDF to ‘A4:
Research Report’, submit Appendices as PDF to ‘A4: Appendices’,
and submit Time Management Report as PDF to ‘A4: Time
Management Report’. Join PDFs where necessary.
Objectives: Assesses objectives 1-6.

Feedback: Assignments will be returned 3 weeks after submission of all elements.

Aims: To develop your skills in researching, critiquing, synthesising and organising
information into a report, and in arguing and justifying a point of view derived from
your research.
Task — In this assignment, you will:

Conduct more extensive research on the issue or topic established in
Assessment Task 2. The topic may be altered with the approval of the workshop
lecturer or tutor. The topic should be based on your group’s general topic area,
but may be

Select a minimum of 6 articles or books relevant to the issue or topic.

Identify the main points that relate to your specific topic, position and argument.

• Organise, synthesise and critique the main points to develop an argument.

Present your argument, fully justified, in an appropriate report format.

Structure of Draft Report:
In Week 13 students will be required to bring to their workshop a hard copy of their
draft report in order to obtain feedback from their lecturer or tutor and have it
marked. It is expected that a draft report will be approximately 2000 words. This
must include the following: the complete main points completely fleshed out in
draft form, the Introduction and conclusion, the complete Reference List using
Harvard Referencing. Your draft must be edited by all other group members – (use
word with track changes, Adobe Reader annotation tools, pages on mac, or an
equivalent editing system). You should print this draft report, to show the edits, as
evidence of this editing is one of the assessment criteria.

Format of Time Management Report
The time management report should be automatically created as the time
management system is used over the course of the semester as per instruction in
class. The time management report therefore will be a printout of the evidence of
the usage of the time management system. Students may substitute the
recommended time management system for their own system if they wish, but their
documentation of their time management must still satisfy the assessment criteria.
Note that, as will become clear, beginning the time management report after the
assignment is complete is not appropriate. Writing a time management report in a
Word Processor cannot satisfy the assessment criteria, so submissions written in
word documents will attract 0 marks for this section.

reaction paper

The Reaction Paper Assignment

You will be writing a 1,000 word Reaction Paper in this course using the instructions and links found below. You will be completing the following tasks and gathering the following information for your paper:

Watch the epigenetics video from PBS. Begin your paper by defining epigenetics in your own words and discussing your reaction to the video.
Research and locate one article on epigenetics (select a study on research conducted on humans, not plants or insects) from a reputable academic source:
Reputable Sources:

journal articles
government publications based on research
Do not use:

magazines of any sort
Wikipedia
How to Perform Your Research

Use the College Library in person or online (log in with your MDC ID number. Your password is the last four digits of your MDC ID unless you have changed it).

Read the epigenetics article you find. Continue your paper with a discussion of the epigenetics article. Be sure to paraphrase (put things in your own words) and be sure to cite the author(s) of the article you find using APA style (see the section below on using APA style). Aim for about a page for this part of your paper.
Complete the Family History Questionnaire. Discuss the concept of epigenesis in light of your family history. Aim for one page for this section of your paper.
Complete the BlueZones.com Vitality Compass (if you have problems opening this link, right-click on it and select to Open in New Window) Life Expectancy Questionnaire. From the BlueZones home page, click on Live Longer and then on Vitality Compass. Print the report and integrate your findings into your discussion. Aim for another page.
Discuss how you can improve your health and longevity in light of your findings in these questionnaires, your understanding of epigenetics, and your knowledge of your family history. This should be your final page.
You can go over or under a page for any of the sections of the paper as long as your total paper is 1,000 words not counting the references.

General Rules for an “A” Paper

1,000 words
Original work; plagiarism score of less than 10% (90% original work)
Double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins
Covers all 6 tasks
Spellchecked
College-level grammar
Cite your article APA style.
No abstract, no cover
Place your name and reference number on the first page. Use page numbers.
Submit the paper by the deadline in the Schedule of Assignments (usually at the end of Week 12 in 16-week semesters, and Week 9 in 12-week semesters) in the Turnitin Drop Box located in the Study Guides, Exams & Drop Box folder. The box will open at the beginning of the week before it is due so that you have time to submit your paper, review the originality report, and resubmit your paper if necessary until you have a plagiarism score of under 10%. If you resubmit, note that it takes 24 hours for your new score to show up in the Turnitin Drop Box.

Submission to Turnitin Drop Box
The Turnitin Drop Box is in Angel. You do NOT have to go to Turnitin to submit your paper. The week before the week when the paper is due, the box will become visible in the Exams, Study Guides, & Drop Box folder on the main lessons page.

Turnitin is a plagiarism checking software. It checks to see if your work is original. We have set the Turnitin Drop Box so you can submit your paper as many times as you want until the due date. That will allow you to check your plagiarism score and see where your work is not original. You can then rephrase that section and put it into your own words. The expectation in this course is that your paper scores no more than 10% in plagiarism. You will be able to resubmit your paper as many times as you need to in order to get it right. Note that it takes 24 hours to see your new plagiarism score after resubmission. No more than 2 or 3 quotes in the entire paper, please.

Avoiding Plagiarism
You must be careful not to copy someone else’s ideas and not to copy and paste ideas from the sources you find. Copying and pasting from someone else’s work is considered plagiarism. You may use other people’s ideas, but you have to put them in your own words and reference the source. Putting things in your own words is called “paraphrasing.” And you must put the reference right after the idea. Needless to say, submitting plagiarized papers, including those copied from one of the Web sites that have “free” papers or even papers you can buy, will result in a penalty. That penalty is up to your instructor, but it will result in at least your receiving a ZERO GRADE for the paper. The paper is worth 10% of your grade in this course. Don’t risk it!

APA Style and References
One thing you will need to do in college is learn how to find and use references. References support your ideas. College-level work must be supported by research. You are expected to do that for this paper. You will research, locate, and use one reputable source from the literature on the topic of epigenetics/epigenesis. The “literature” is composed of studies that have been conducted in a scholarly way to support ideas. Scholarly sources can be found in journals or in some Web sites, especially those that come from .edu domains (.edu is short for “educational” Web sites) or .gov domans (.gov are government sites). The College Libraries have dozens of good journals you can use. You will be using the College Library for this paper. You may do the research in person or use the Web to access our library. See your librarian for more information on finding credible sources.

In APA style, you cite a source in two places: within the body of the paper where you use the idea or words of the author of the paper; and again in the Reference List at the end of the paper. For example, you might say, “According to Researcher A (2011)…epigenetics is…” What you must do is supply the researcher’s name within a sentence or at the end of a sentence in parenthesis (Researcher A, 2011). Then you give the full information for locating the study in the Reference List. That’s what Reference Lists are for: they allow the person reading your paper to look up your source if they want to. So remember, citing references APA style, requires two things: 1) that you cite the reference within the body of the paper, and 2) that you list the full reference at the end in the Reference List.

APA Tutorial
There are multiple tutorials and other training sources on APA style at the APA Web site.
