Instructions for Research Project (Due Week: 14)
For this research paper, you will be taking a more in-depth look at an issue involving children’s literature. You may choose one of the pre-selected topics listed below or propose a topic of your choice for the project. If you wish to research a topic of your own choosing, you will be required to request instructor permission prior to starting your research.
The following are all possible topics for you to focus on for your research project:
• Uses of Gender and/or Sexuality in Children’s Fiction
• The Role of Disney in Molding Modern Children
• Locating Fantasy in Children’s Fiction
• Colonizing Children; Colonialism and Children’s Fiction
• Environmentalism and Pacifism in Children’s Literature
• The Uses and Limits of Animal Realism
• Before Harry Potter: The Marked Hero in Children’s Literature.
• The Time Travel Device
• What Can We Learn From Animal Friendships?
• Surviving Childhood: Survival Stories in Children’s Literature
• Utopian Animal Societies
• Witnesses to Contemporary History
• Fantasy Creatures
• African American Trickster Tales
• A topic of your own choosing, with the permission of the instructor (such a request must be made and permission granted at least four weeks before the due date of the paper).
Be sure to adhere to the following when writing your research project:
Provide a Works Cited of 5 or more sources that vary in date of publication or origin, author, source, media (i.e. not all internet sources, not all journal articles, not all by the same author). The Works Cited should reflect the breadth and depth of your research.
Your research paper should be 10-12 typed pages, not counting the Works Cited, double-spaced in 12-point font.
Research Writing
A research paper is more than the sum of your sources, more than a collection of different pieces of information about a topic, and more than a review of literature in a field. A research paper analyzes a perspective or argues a point. In an analytical research paper, you do research to become an expert on a topic so that you can restructure and present the parts of the topic from your own perspective. An argumentative research paper needs to support your stand on an issue. An argumentative research paper uses information as evidence to support a point. Works Cited Page
Documenting sources at the end of the research paper consists of listing all of the sources from which you quoted, paraphrased, or summarized. In MLA style, the sources in a paper are listed alphabetically on a separate page headed works cited. It follows the final page of the text. By citing your sources you are letting your reader know that you’ve consulted experts whose ideas and information back up your own thoughts and ideas. You must cite your sources correctly so that your academic integrity is not called into question. If you don’t document, you could inadvertently plagiarize.
