Literary Analysis Essay on 1 of 10 options (Short Stories)

Assignment Details
• Point of view: third person (no “I,” etc.)
• Length: about 1200 words (plus a Works Cited)
• Presentation: MLA style, 12-point font (Times New Roman preferred)
• Secondary sources: three minimum. Note that each body paragraph must include at least one direct quote from the primary text(s) and that each secondary source must be quoted at least once within the overall essay.
• Please note that you must turn in a regular Works Cited with this assignment: the annotated bibliography is not the same as a Works Cited, although it does contain much of the same information.
• Please pick one of these options!
Option A
Both “La Belle Zoraïde” and “No Name Woman” have frame stories, meaning that an introductory story “frames” the more central narrative. Choose one of these texts and write an essay in which you discuss the importance of the frame story to the larger narrative.

Option B
Discuss the politics of reproduction, including historical context, in two of the following texts: “La Belle Zoraïde,” “No Name Woman” and “Hills Like White Elephants.”

Option C
What is the significance of the beaded curtain in Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants”?

Option D
What role does Paul play in his own demise? Is his fate tragic, inevitable, justified? Compose an essay in which you define and argue the cause of Paul’s reckless behavior and his eventual suicide.

Option E
Is Paul’s father partly to blame? Compose an essay in which you discuss the role of Paul’s father in his son’s downfall.

Option F
What is the significance of flowers in “Paul’s Case”?

Option G
Compose an essay in which you discuss how O’Connor problematizes gender in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.”

Option H
Discuss the role of religious faith in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.”

Option I
Sartorial choices are important in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” Compose an essay in which you interpret the role of clothing in O’Connor’s iconic short story.

Option J
Should an author’s biography be used to interpret his or her work? Using one of the works from this unit, compose an essay in which you argue either for or against interpreting a text through the lens of its author’s biography.

Essay Elements
Your essay needs to observe the standard rules of effective essay writing:
• Strong, clear introduction that establishes why the reader should care. This is where you hook your reader.
• Strong, focused thesis statement that summarizes your main idea or argument in one sentence. The thesis should be the final sentence of your introduction.
• Use appropriate transitions.
• Avoid using first-person voice (e.g., “I,” we,” “you,” etc.).
• Include all parts of an essay:
o Introduction
o Body/Supporting Paragraphs
o Conclusion
• Use concrete language:
o Avoid ambiguous pronouns (e.g., it, this, that, those, these).
o Use strong active verbs.

Consider the case of CEO Martin Thomas, who recently discovered that the organization to which he outsources the manufacturing of one of his company’s parts has been forcing laborers to work seven days a week and ten hours a day. These laborers receive minimal wages, yet without the work their families could starve and they would be homeless. The organization that Thomas outsources to is the only large employer in the area and if Thomas terminated his contract with the organization, it would likely close, leaving hundreds of people without jobs.

For this assignment you should consider whether or not Thomas should continue to outsource the manufacturing of these parts to this organization. You will consider the ethical impact of the decision you think he should make, justifying your approach. You will, if necessary, offer another option to terminating this contract.

For this assignment, you will do the following:

Locate three peer-reviewed articles on ethical decision making.
Read each article and consider your own opinion of the issue.
Write a 2- to 3-page paper offering a decision based on the facts in this case. You should consider the ethical issues involved in your decision and justify your approach.
Be sure to use effective written communication strategies to convey your ideas.
Your well-written paper should meet the following requirements:

Be 2-3 pages in length
Include at least three outside sources, in addition to properly citing information
Be formatted according to APA guidelines
