Analysis of Human Services of an Abuse Scenario

Assignment 2: LASA: Analysis of Human Services of an Abuse Scenario
In this assignment, you will be introduced to a real-world case that requires a high-level analysis of theoretical, ethical, and legal factors to explain how an abused child should have been handled by the human services agency. This exercise will demonstrate the types of cases that are common in human services. You will learn how to approach such types of cases from necessary perspectives that always need to be considered by a human services worker.
Tasks:
In this assignment, you will read a scenario, analyze its legal and ethical implications, and discuss options to address the human services needs. Consider the following scenario.
You are working in a human services agency that provides diagnostic services and residential placement to youth in the court system. A female Italian immigrant teenager was placed in this center by Children and Youth Protective Services due to suspected sexual abuse by her father. The agency conducted an assessment on the child to determine the effects of the suspected abuse on her functioning, provided her with a safe environment for twelve weeks, during which time she was allowed supervised visitation with her father, and encouraged her to trust the staff members. During this period, her case went to trial and was dismissed despite strong indications of sexual abuse. The court ruling was based largely on the results of the assessment conducted by the agency professional in addition to the client’s activity in residential placement, including visitation with her father during that period of time. As a result, the agency lost its funding for residential placement. Therefore, the girl was returned to her home the following week.
Apply scholarly theory, practice, and ethics to write an 8- to 10-page paper that includes the following:
?Identify the legal and ethical obligations to both the girl and the father.
?Identify the multiple levels of system failure in this case.
?Discuss the distinction between the legal justification for the release of the girl and the ethical problems with such actions. In your discussion, explain how an individual human services provider might come to deal personally with such a conflict.
?Identify the cultural considerations needed when working with this family.
?Describe the original or historical intent of child welfare systems in caring for vulnerable children.
?Discuss to what extent the agencies have fulfilled their responsibilities to their mission and the original intent in creating such agencies.
?Propose two to three culturally and legally appropriate strategies that may be provided to the girl that will address her human services needs.

Frankenstein

The Assignment
Write a sustained analysis of one central theme that appears in Frankenstein. I have organized our class discussions in terms of five main themes. You may choose one of these themes or formulate your own theme using the options presented below as a guide. If you choose your own theme, run it by me first.
1. The Bad Parenting Theme. Is the tragedy of Frankenstein caused by bad parenting? Who are the good parents in the novel? The bad parents? What are the characteristics of each? What are the results of parental neglect? What is the contract between parents and children? What happens if either parents or children break the contract? How do references to God and Adam and address this theme?
2. The Novel as Political Allegory. How can the novel be said to tell the tale of the French Revolution? In this allegory, what does the Creature represent? What does Victor represent? How do ideas of the social contract enter into their relationship? What does the novel say about the obligations of the upper classes? About the rights of and/or the threats posed by the lower classes? (allegory: story in which people, things, happenings have symbolic meaning; story that offers moral lesson)
3. The Ethics of Scientific Inquiry Debate. What message does Frankenstein ultimately send about the value of scientific/technological investigation? Does science mean progress? Does the work of men of genius always lead, as Professor Waldman asserts, to ?the solid advantage of mankind?? What are the novel?s attitudes toward Victor?s work? Toward the Creature? If science is to benefit humanity, what needs to happen? How is this theme still relevant today?
4. The Value of Ties of Affection/Danger of Solitude Theme. Throughout Frankenstein we see many statements of the value of friendship and of ties of affection. In particular the domestic family unit holds primary value in the lives of both Victor and the Creature. How is this domestic space important to each character? What are the values associated with the domestic sphere? What happens when characters lose their domestic bonds? How does the novel assert the danger of solitude/self-absorption? If you would like, you can shape this topic as a feminist argument about the importance of the private/feminine/domestic sphere whose value system is opposed to the public/masculine sphere of science, politics, commerce etc.
5. Use Frankenstein to construct a definition of a human being. What qualities must one have to be considered human? Which characters in the book possess these qualities? What are the rights and responsibilities associated with being a human being? What makes one a monster? Who are the humans and who are the monsters in the novel and why?

Rhetorical Analysis

The Art of Diversity, please do a rhetorical analysis on a piece from chapter four "Projecting Gender" or five "Examining Difference" in Seeing & Writing 4. The structure of your paper is simple. You will have an introduction, four body paragraphs, a rebuttal, and a conclusion. You need not do any outside research for this paper. You are diving into the text and looking at how the author uses persuasion within it. You will build on the logic unit that we are finishing, but you will examine the text under analysis closer to look at if the author’s persuasion is working or not. If yes, why is it working? If not, why?
In your body paragraphs, you will explore the four parts of the Rhetorical Triangle. You do not need to put them in any order, but each part of the triangle must be explored in the paper and your ideas must be supported by textual evidence from the text in the form of quotes, paraphrases, or summaries. The paper must also be balanced, spending about as much time on each section as the others. *Remember the sandwich metaphor in writing: your ideas, the source text, and finish with your ideas to elaborate on the passage chosen that is under analysis.
Therefore, the four parts of the rhetorical triangle you MUST explore are logos – logic, ethos – character of artist/writer, pathos — emotions created by the piece, and mythos – the tradition the piece is working within or against or both.

Fingerprint Project

You will process a variety of porous and nonporous items for latent prints using whatever supplies you are able to obtain.
List of supplies that will work for this project:
1. Black fingerprint powder
2. Crushed Charcoal
3. Unsweetened Cocoa
4. Corn Starch (last resort)
5. Fingerprint powdering brush or large make-up brush.
6. Clear wide scotch tape.
7. Index cards.
It is not mandatory for you to purchase fingerprint supplies for this project. Many of you may be able to borrow supplies from your local law enforcement office or military unit.
If you are interested in buying supplies, a small jar of powder and a brush will run you about $15.00 at redwop.com.
Describe your experience in a 500 to 800 word essay, addressing the following questions:
1. How many different prints or partial prints did you locate?
2. What types of objects did you lift the prints from? Where were they located?
3. What supplies did you use? What technique did you use to apply the powder?
4. Did you expect to find more prints, or fewer?
5. Can you identify the prints as different from one another? How?
It is very important to pick a variety of different surfaces for this assignment. I would say at least 5-10 different types of surfaces (porous and nonporous) should be attempted. For an "A" paper, I would expect it to be longer than 500 words.
I want lots of details about your successes and failures!
Some types of surfaces that you would expect to find fingerprints on? How about: Microwave, oven, door knob, window, sliding glass door, bathroom mirror, toilet seat, paper items around the house, cars, soda cans, bowls and dishes, glasses, ect.
NOTE: if you are planning on using real black fingerprint powder for the project: the powder is not healthy to inhale. I suggest you either wear a painter’s mask or a simple bandana over your nose for safety reasons. If you powder outdoors, be sure not to situate yourself downwind of the powder!

Too long, see it in description.

Topic of ASSIGNMENT: The "social constructivist" perspective argues that people’s understandings of, and actions toward, the environment are largely a product of their social position [e.g., culture, socioeconomic background]. In your opinion, is this perspective a help or a hindrance in resolving environmental problems and/or crafting environmental policy? Why?
Instruction:
Provide evidence/examples for your position. You may choose to answer this question for a particular environmental issue, such as the international climate talks that have taken place in Rio or Copehnhagen, or you may choose to answer it in general without reference to any particular environmental issue. Remember that you are required to find two ACADEMIC articles to support your position, and to cite them as footnotes or the end of the document.
Students are required to find, read, and cite two scholarly research articles that offer support for their argument. For ease of presentation, cite sources as footnotes rather than in a bibliography [TAs will offer assistance on this process]. It can be very difficult to write an argumentative paper—it is not merely a reflection of having read the material but of being able to critically analyze the most pertinent themes, construct an opinion supported by evidence from the readings and class, and present your argument in a coherent and logical fashion. Keep in mind that presenting a powerful argument is harder to do in a short format.
PLEASE read each sentence of instruction carefully, the last environmental essay I got from your website received a C because it did not fulfill the instruction. The quality of the academic citation is very important, a bad one will lead to a fail.
