About me-
My name is Precious Shaw, I am 27 years old, and I am from a small country called Oakdale, Louisiana. I come from a large, close-knit family that consist of nine people, my mom and dad who have been married for 41 years now, my four older sisters, my older brother, and my younger brother. most of my siblings are married with kids right now, but none of them ever have gotten the chance to go abroad and teach. I would love to be the first in my family and where I am from to say that I taught in South Korea!
why do you want to teach in Korea?
I want to teach in Korea because it is a once in a life time opportunity that only a few people get to experience.
– What experience do you have to help you teach/live in Korea?
Growing up my mom had her own babysitting service, and I use to play school with the younger kids and of course I was the teacher. Teaching others something they did not know or understand when I was younger made me feel whole and complete as if I were making a difference in their life and when they caught on and actually grasped and understood what I was teaching them made me feel so happy that I can share what I know someone else. Teaching kind of stuck with me after that, when I was in high school I got the opportunity to teach in a program called Character Counts where high school students got to teach younger students that was either in elementary or middle school basic values called the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. This program was one of the most amazing things I got to experience when I was in high school because my intentions were to teach younger kids and teens about values that were already instilled in me and how these values would help them deal with situations they were or would face in school or at home. The whole time I was helping them, they unknowingly help me realize my desire to want to help people that were younger than me because their desire to learn what you already know kind of fueled me and made me excited to want to teach them even more. When I went to college and began to experience real life situations and go through my own personal trials and tribulations, it was not until after I could understand and conquer what I went through that my desire to help and teach kids, teens, and young adults around me so I talked to my pastor and told him about my passion and desire to help kids, teens, and young adults around me and in 2007 I started helping teach children church and Sunday school classes to kids, teens, and young adults age ranging from 3 – 25. Teaching them made me feel amazing because I began to feel the connection and relationship to hear their personal life stories and things they experienced and it touched me because they began to love me and trust me and they felt love that I always taught them about, they saw that I respected how they felt, they knew that they could confide in me things they would not tell their parents/friends/siblings and knew that I would not judge them but give them advice out of love and tell them how I would handle something if I were going through what they were going thru. Through these different teaching experiences, my passion and desire to teach others something that they don’t know nor have full comprehension is what truly makes me happy.
– What special personality/qualifications/experience do you have to help K students learn English?
My special personality would be I am pretty much a happy bubbly person, always smiling like 95% of the time. I am a really person who loves to make others smile and I always try my best to make others feel comfortable around me. I feel that in its purest form, a smile is an open sign of friendliness or happiness and that its meaning is universal amongst all cultures around the world.
My qualifications and experience to teach English to South Korea students would be my love and passion to teach people younger than me something such as English that was instilled in me and taught to me growing up. Something else that I would qualify me to teach English to South Korea students is that I taught in high school through a program called Character Counts when I was in high school, and that I have been teaching kids, teens, and young adults ages 3-25 in my church since 2007 and currently still teaching there. My love and passion when teaching others make me so happy. I feel that all of my learning and teaching experiences that I have prepared me to do something like teach English to Korean students because I will show them the same love, compassion, patience, and understanding that I show to all of my students. I know that it is going to be a challenge mainly because of the language barrier but I feel that being able to teach them English would be so much fun and that it will be my greatest experience yet because I will be able to teach students something that will improve their lives and teach them something that they will be able to use for rest of their lives. That for me would mean the world to me!
– What are your future goals?
My future goals are to travel, experience, and learn about different cultures around.
– How do your goals fit in with teaching in Korea?
Well I love to travel and I love teaching others and even though I am going to school for information technology my heart, passion, and love for teaching will always be a major part in my life. Teaching in South Korea will fit in to my goals because I never thought that teaching abroad as being an option for me but after doing my research and finding out about the TaLK program. Being part of the TaLK program would help me experience a one in a life time opportunity.
-What specifically are you interested in about Korean culture/traditions (lay this on thick)
One of the first cultures that really caught my attention was South Korea because growing up when I was in elementary school one of my best friends was from South Korea and when we were in third grade she moved back to South Korea and it broke my heart. The older I got the more research on South Korea because I wanted to know more and more about where she was from, their life style, and their culture. I found myself falling in love with the culture, food, and their beautiful language and as I began to find more videos online to help me better understand everything about South Korea and fall in love with South Korea! I’ve always wanted to visit South Korean to learn all about their culture past and present first hand. I have always wanted to taste and learn how to cook Korean food. I have always wanted to learn their beautiful language and be able to have a conversation and become fluent in Korean, but to go there and teach there and be able to experience South Korea first hand would just be simply amazing. It would be a one in a life time opportunity experience for me!!

1. Thesis statement.
Thesis
The great American civil war was a period of great unrest both socially and politically. However, this was the period where America got to witness a lot of technological innovation as well as advancement. The war, which was the last of its kind, managed to leave a great impression not only in the casualties of the war but society as we know it today. Some of the technologies developed during the period have been improved over the years into technology that is of core importance to society today. On the other hand, the lethal technologies were able to leave catastrophic marks society in general.
Argument in the support of the thesis.
During the civil war technological advances were made in many fields including food and medicine, however, there are a number of fields whose technological advancements directly affected the war. These include weaponry, transport and communication. Communication, which had started slightly before the civil war played an important role of ensuring that information regarding the war, was carried far and wide (Zylstra, 2004). This was all thanks to the invention of the newspaper which ensured that all information regarding the law was made public. This was also important in the requesting of civilians to enroll for the war. Communication was also advance in form of the invention of the telegraph. This enhanced the communication between troops or platoons as well as the between the soldiers in the field and the base. This was important for the war for information that had previous had the risk of being passed on to the wrong hands or would take long to reach particular destinations now took a shorter period.
The second group of technological advancements during the war was in the transport sector. Here, major steps were taken in the invention of the railroad, balloons and submarines. The railroad was one of the largest innovations that helped tipped the scale in the civil war. When the war started, the north had already constructed 22,000 miles of railroad as compared to the 9,000 miles. Most of the locomotive factories were also situated in the north. While the northern railroad tracks were standard gauge which allowed any train car to ride on, the southern tracks were standardized meaning that passengers and goods had to constantly switch tracks. During the war, union soldiers used the tracks for transportation of supplies as well as troops from one destination to the other. This gave them an advantage over the confederates.
During the civil war, planes had not been invented thus it had been hard to access aerial surveillance for any of the parties. However, with the invention of the balloons, information via telegram could be send from one destination to the other without having to traverse over enemy ground. At sea, the submarines helped create a blockade that did not allow the confederates to pass (Ennis, 2008). These blockades were placed at all ports of the areas that belonged to the confederates. This in the end gave the union army an added advantage despite the spirited fight that confederates put up.
The greatest impart of technology was however advanced in the weaponry field. The revolution of the firearms played the greatest role in the war by leaving casualties that would have otherwise been in smaller numbers. Prior to the war, riffles would only shoot one bullet at a time. Though easy to reload, this was rather cumbersome. However, during the war repeat riffle was invented (Kingseed, 2004). This riffle was able to discharge more bullets before the need to reload arrived. The most famous of this riffle at the time was the Spencer carbine which would fire up to seven shots in thirty seconds. Most combatants used smooth-bore muskets that had a maximum range of about 300 feet. However, shortly before the start of the war, the invention of rifling meant bullets could spin and travel up to 900 feet (Timmons, 2005). Defense was made easy with the use of the Minie bullet. This was an important defensive development and increased the range and accuracy of muskets. Like all the other technological advancements that took part in this period the north rather than the south used added advancement. This meant that the north would have added advantage given the amount of damage that would be would be inflicted using these advanced weapons (Mountjoy, 2009).
The second part of technological advancement that that played a significant role in the civil war was in the ship industry. While both sides of the war had been aware of the fact that they needed to armor-clad their ships, the north obviously had advanced technology. This is because during the first encounter between the two sides using this technology left the whole confederate fleet destroyed (Simson, 2001).
It is therefore clear that technology advancement played an important role in swaying the outcome of the American civil war. As evidenced, the region with the most technological advancement was able to inflict more casualties that the region with less technological advancement. Thus, it was during this period that some of the greatest technological advancement was created.

I did well on the writing samples for LSAT and GMAT, so there is little need to worry about language usage. I mostly need help with what topics are relevant and how to communicate them to potential schools. The statement should be usable for applications to multiple law schools.
Academic: The rest of the application should include my grades and scores (3.6gpa, 168lsat, 710gmat). I attended Pearl River High School, then the University of New Orleans, I spent one semester taking a class at Southeastern Louisiana University when Hurricane Katrina disrupted UNO operations during my first semester, I resumed my studies at UNO the next semester. I originally attended UNO on a scholarship for civil engineering. Throughout college I kept my education diverse, taking business and pre-law classes as well as a few real estate and stock oriented courses. I took and passed every law oriented course UNO offered, even one that I had to take at a satellite campus. During my studies I realized that I would prefer a field with greater human interaction, people add intricacies that are just not found in the mundane memorization of formulae. For this reason, I was ecstatic to learn that UNO had just gotten accredited for an Interdisciplinary Studies Degree. This afforded me the opportunity to graduate with a focus on business, law, and philosophy, eventually writing my thesis on the philosophy of the legal environment of business.
Student Organizations: I was a founder and president of the Phi Alpha Delta pre-law fraternity chapter at UNO. I was a founding father and executive board officer for the New Orleans chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. I was the alumni liaison for both the Golden Key International Honour Society chapter and the Alpha Kappa Psi colony. I went to multiple conferences on behalf of Golden Key and was the group’s sole representative at the Dallas regional conference (which turned out to be an important leadership experience, the people I met and worked with there were influential to me and I am still in contact with some of them to this day). I served multiple branches of the student government, as a senator first, then on the budget committee, finally as a member of the supreme court before resigning my senior year to found a non-profit. I was also a member of numerous other clubs and honor societies.
Other activities: During high school I was a state place winner in wrestling. After high school, I continued to help coach the team that I had been a member of at Pearl River High School. I have been a LHSAA certified coach for years now, and plan on continuing to coach if there are any opportunities near where I go to school next. I would also like to coach football some day. Coaching has been a major influence on my life, shaping the way I interact with other people. In wrestling there are only two competitors, success or failure cannot be accredited to anyone else. It was by coaching other people through the same stages that I can remember going through that I realized when the competition actually takes place. Most matches are not decided on the mat. It is the effort of preparation that decides most contests before the contestants even meet each other. Directly after High School I joined the Navy to enter their Nuclear Propulsion Engineering field, unfortunately I discovered in bootcamp that I have scoliosis and was discharged. I have not allowed the issue to prevent me from filling the role of on mat coach; I have managed to keep myself in better shape than any other coach on the team.
Work: I have been working for B.C.I. since I was old enough to get a work release. I have worked as a stock boy, cashier, construction worker, and for a while now as a manager. I have worked over and under a diverse group of people over the years and have enjoyed the challenge of balancing the objectives of multiple people.
Other experience: I recently had the honor of serving on jury duty. I have to admit that it was not nearly as boring as I had heard. Having taken law classes before, I found the opportunity exciting. The case ended up being settled by a plea deal, but the deal did not happen until we entered deliberation, so I was able to gain unique insight into the legal system at work. I was happy to find that I am more interested in law school now than before.
