Ethnic discrimination
Introduction
It is a well documented fact; ethnic discrimination has been a contentious issue in most nations groups. In essence, ethnic discrimination is an unequal treatment given to people based on the fact; the group of people belongs to a certain ethnic group. In this regard, researchers argue that, ethnic discrimination is the creation of offensive environment that if not handled with care can result to unequal treatments among other unfair treatments (Lentin 3). It is with no doubt; ethnic discrimination is critical social issue. With this in mind, this paper seeks to analyze how ethnic discrimination maintains division of labor and racial/ethnic stratification in addition; discuss how American history X movie has provided examples of racial discrimination and racial/ethnic stratification.
In facts, it is with no doubt that, ethnic discrimination maintains division of labor in the sense that, it promotes inequity in the distribution of wealth and income. Ethnic discrimination leads to lower wages in addition, reduces employment opportunities as well promotions. In this regard, the group subject to discrimination suffers which as a result; fall in relative living standard for earning less than they would. It is important noting that, ethnic discrimination occurs in the labour market due to workers and employees having distaste for working with certain people in different ethnic groups. In many cases, many prefer associating with people from their group thus disliking people from other different races, community or else religion among others which as result, affects division of labor based on the fact that, workers subject to discrimination ends up receiving unfair treatments and a time reducing employment opportunities which eventually leads to lower productivity.
In addition, ethnic discrimination maintains division of labor in the sense that, there are more benefits given to people from the manager ethnic group. In such instances, the manager may ends up choosing workers from his ethnic group without considering their services. As a result, other ethnic groups may be sidelined and denied opportunities despite of their talents, skills and working experience. Eventually, this may lower labor productivity due to lack of expertise. With ethnic discrimination, there is high risk of unemployment due to the fact that, it promotes favoritism in job opportunities. In this context, Meyer (4) raises a contentious issue on the reason why so many companies have employees from the same ethnic group is because, job opportunities revolve the same ethnic group in addition, and promotions are given in favoritism. As a result, workers subject to discrimination loses interest due to unfair treatment thus, guarantee decline in productivity.
In conjunction with this, it is important noting that, ethnic discrimination maintains both racial and ethnic stratification. According to Firth (3), stratification is the hierarchy position in regard to economic production that influences social rewards to people in positions. Ethnic discrimination may emanate in conflicts that occur between different classes of people, for upper classes using superior power to acquire largest share of social resources to their ethnic groups. As a result, this deters equal distribution of resources. Additionally, racism is the systematic practice which through discrimination involves denying people their rights and resources due to racial differences. As a result, this affects every aspect of the society in the sense that, the less economically disadvantage groups suffer from unfair treatment from the advantageous countries. Ethnic discrimination maintains racism due to; the belief that an individual is less advantage because of language customs, place of birth and skin color or any factor that reveals the basic nature of the person. The best example is of Blacks who are seen by racists as subhuman more like beasts and a time considered being evil. All these arguments are based on ethnic discrimination which affects ethnic groups in dealing with others.
American history X movie
According to Smith (3), American History X movie is a dram film directed by Tony Kaye in 1998. The movie gives the meaning to racism. In general, the story involves the modern-day racial hatred going on in the United States. The story is meant imposes how racism creates hatred. The writer and director of this movie accomplish their purpose through character developments, cinematography and the targeted audiences. Character development has best accomplished the purpose of the movie through Derek’s character as a white man full of racial hatred to the blacks. Based on the traumatic incident, Derek portrays his rage on the minority community basing his argument on how the minority groups are wasting taxpayer’s money and corrupting the society. It is at this point, he encourages his followers to come up with measures to stop the migrants. He shows great hatred towards minority groups through raiding the Korean market in addition; murdering two black teenagers that attempted to break his house. His attitude changed, after working with a black man that rescued him in prison. He tells the story to his friends on how his life was turned around by a black man.
The film best shows how blacks are often heavily disadvantageous and given unfair treatments. According to Derek an American citizen is granted liberty, pursuit to happiness and life. No wonder, he ends up showing unequal treatments to the blacks to the extent of killing them. Another example is when skinheads litter the grocery store. In this case, they torture the manager, cashier and the guys that stocked grocery simply because they belong to another race. The manager was beaten up with the cashier lady tortured. In reality, these people never deserved this kind of treatment thus; portrays racial discrimination.

In essence, ethnic discrimination greatly maintains division of labor and racial/ethnic stratification as discussed in the paper. In addition, the American History X movie best provides examples of racial discrimination through Derek’s character and skinheads. With this in mind, this paper has analyzed how ethnic discrimination maintains division of labor and racial/ethnic stratification in addition; discussed American history X movie.
