The Action Essay should ultimately propose a recommended course of action that would solve the problem you discussed in the analysis. The essay also needs to provide context and support for your argument, demonstrating sophisticated understanding of how different textual strategies work together to make an academic audience receptive to the ideas intended by you as an author.
In creating this Action Essay, you will need to think carefully about the audience and purpose for the essay, considering what proofs and premises an audience is likely to find appealing as well as what kinds of alternative courses of action or definitions of the problem the audience might be inclined to consider.
That is, I will be looking for the strategies and principles we’ve learned to be not only used but catered to your audience, purpose, and context. For example, if your audience is a Republican with biased, right-wing views, you probably won’t use testimony from a Democrat. If your audience is Tina Turner, you might use a musical example rather than a historical example about George Washington.
I will be looking for the use of logos, testimony, data, and I will look for you to frame issues in ways that preserve stasis. That is, you should frame your arguments in terms of the prevailing counterargument so that you and your opponent are clearly arguing about the same thing.
Basically, in the invention I’m asking you to discuss a problem and argue for a solution. If you want an example, you can see the “Sample Invention” posted on BB. If you need help developing your argument (writing a full five pages), think about the appeals that you used for each paragraph in PG#2 and #3. Here are PG #3’s appeals: consistency, justice, practicability, expediency. Here are PG #2’s: definition, conjecture, quality, policy. If you are not sure how to “appeal” to these principles, please ask me.
