short paper

The Assignment: You are to use an international relations theory to explain the US decision to initiate the 2003 Iraq War, drawing heavily on Bob Woodwards Plan of Attack.
While you are not required to use subheadings for theory, argument, and evidence, you should be clear about what you are doing when you are doing it. If you skip any sections you will not earn any points for that section. You do not need to provide a standard introduction or conclusion and will not lose any points if you begin with a summary of the theory.
Theory: You should begin by noting the theory you are using and
summarizing it without reference to the case study. 20 points
1. You are to provide a summary in general/abstract terms (no mention of Iraq) 2. Because this section is worth 20 points, it should be roughly 20% of the paper. The same rule applies to all sections that follow. 3. Because you did not create the theory you are using, you should cite (with endnote, footnote, or parenthetical citation) your summary of the theory. If you do not provide citation after your summary of the theory you will incur a 10 point penalty. 4. In citing the theory you must use Goldstein and Pevehouse or Mansfield & Snyder. You may not cite lecture or outside sources (be especially wary of random online sources on IR theory) without my explicit permission.
Argument: You should explicitly state how your approach applies to the use of force broadly and then how it applies to this case. 30 points
1. Here you will apply your theory to the question of why states go to war but continue to do so in general/abstract terms. For example, you might say “Defensive realism suggests that states go to war when they face threats to their security. By threats to their security I mean….” 2. Because you are developing this logic, you do not need to provide citation. 3. After you have developed the abstract explanation of war from your theory’s perspective, you will provide a brief discussion of its application to the 2003 Iraq War. The section should begin “Defensive realism explains the US decision to go to war with

Iraq in 2003….” This is similar to a thesis statement and it should track with the previous abstract tie between your theory and war.
Evidence: You should provide as much specific evidence as possible from the Woodward book to support your argument. You should cite all evidence and ideas that are not your own (see
citation guide). 50 points
1. Note the points associated with this section. This is the heart of the paper and should be at least half the length (if you are a good writer you can get away with skimping in the previous sections but this section is where the money is). 2. Take care to organize your evidence around three or so subarguments. For example: “I will first provide evidence that the Bush administration thought Iraq had WMD and that they believed it was a threat to the US….” 3. Evidence consists of facts (e.g., UNSCOM inspectors found….), statements by Woodward (in quote or paraphrase form), and statements by named or anonymous officials. Every piece of evidence must be cited in order to count. I will interpret anything that is not cited as an unsupported assertion. 4. Citation entails a footnote, endnote, or parenthetical citation. Regardless of the form you use, citation of evidence MUST include a page number (or Kindle number). Publication details of the Woodword book in a follow-on page does not constitute citation. Students who provide no citation will incur an additional 20 point penalty. (Note: I do not care whether you use MLA, Chicago Manual of Style, or another conventional citation format but in referencing sources you should provide all relevant information.) 5. The Woodward book should be the primary (in most cases sole) source of evidence. The book has more evidence to support DR than other approaches, which is why most students choose that theory. Note, however, that I expect more in terms of evidence from DR papers because more is available. 6. Those writing from pluralism would benefit from a bit of outside research (though Woodward should still be the main source). For example, the book provides little polling data.
Brevity: Your paper must not exceed two pages, with adequate (no less than 1 inch) margins and (12 pt. TimesNewRoman) font. This will force you to make your words count and to focus on the most important information.
1. You may single space. 2. If you break any of the brevity rules above you will suffer a 10 point penalty AND I will use your electronic copy to adjust the paper according to the guidelines and will only read the first two pages. 3. If you use endnotes, they may follow on a third page. You may also provide a cover page and/or use the header for title/your name/date, etc. to save space.
Tips

Defensive Realism (DR): focus on Iraqs threat to US security from WMD, ties to terrorist groups, and prior aggressive behavior. Constructivism (C): US identity as a beacon of freedomPluralism (P): Bush as a strong leader who wants to get re-elected
1. I caution students against using offensive realism (OR) or neoliberal institutionalism (NLI). 2. If you are tempted to use OR note that its explanation of this case stresses a US desire to preserve its hegemonic control of the Middle East (using this approach does NOT entail providing lots of quotes about “staying on the offensive” and preventive war, which is arguably not OR at all. 3. If you really want to use NLI, get in touch with me.

Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Stowe’s Cabin (1852)

Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Stowe’s Cabin (1852) posits sympathy as a powerful engine of social change. The novel also raises questions about the efficacy of enlisting fellow-feeling in the service of social reform. Sympathy could thus be read as a disturbing emotion, an excessive one perhaps, in need of regulation or rethinking. This last statement is echoed in works by Paul Bloom, James Baldwin, Slavoj Zizek and Robert Alexander( very important to use and mention works, and how they are related to the book, of at least one of these authors), all of whom have reservations about projects of social reform that echo Stowe’s reliance on fellow-feeling. Drawing on an idea articulated by one of the aforementioned, read two or three scenes from the novel in relation to that idea. You choose the writer and the idea. To be sure, you do not have to agree with what these writers have to say about sympathy, charity or sentimentality. You do, however, have to represent their views fairly and engage their ideas to think about the novel.

Organize your essay around a clearly articulated thesis. Support your thesis with textual evidence and/or experiences that you then analyze in order to support your claims. Organize your evidence in well-constructed paragraphs that are unified under topic sentences that the paragraphs then logically develop. I’m looking for how well you develop your ideas throughout the essay. Remember to write with an audience in mind. While I’m your primary audience, your essay should be understood by anyone not familiar with the texts you’re writing about or the discussions we’ve been having in class.

Avoid absolute statements, vague generalizations, and clichés. Don’t be boring.

Don’t forget to title your essays (your titles should echo your thesis) and number your pages.

CLEAN DRINKING WATER

Another issue will be the availability of clean and plentiful drinking water. Search the web, Google Scholar, and try to find an estimate of the percentage of the world population that does not have access to sanitary drinking water. How do you think global change (population increases, development, desertification, poverty, and climate change) will affect us?

Business Proposal

I need these 5 questions all answered in APA format. Here are the 5 questions that ALL need to be answered:

Question 1: You are designing a grocery delivery business. Via the internet, your company will offer staples and frozen foods in a large metropolitan area and then deliver them within a customer-defined window of time. You plan to partner with two major food stores in the area. What should your competitive priorities be and what capabilities do you want to develop in your own core and support processes?

Is it possible for a project to have more than one critical path? Discuss the implications of such a situation with respect to each of the following aspects:

a. Project risk
b. Total available slack
c. Resource dependencies
d. Responsibilities of the project manager

Question 2: A flowchart helps us see all of the steps in a process, which in turn helps us improve the process. It also helps us identify and eliminate any redundant steps in a process. Using Word tools (SmartArt under the Insert tab), design a process flow chart for the grocery delivery business in Question 1 above. In the discussion element of your response, clearly define the steps within the process and provide a rationale for each step. Include all elements that you feel are necessary and appropriate to the process of a singular customer. The assumption is that the process is repeatable for every customer using the service. Think of the elements that you will be addressing or answering in the succeeding questions.

Question 3: For the grocery delivery business addressed in Question 1, the grocery chains that you are planning to partner with use differing inventory control models. Company A utilizes the Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory control model and Company B uses an Economic Order Quantity model. In reviewing your business plan, the bank loan officer has noticed this. As the loan officer is not overly familiar with either model, a request has been made of you to provide a description of each model and an explanation of why partnering with these companies would or would not create a conflict within your operations. Provide a detailed analysis of the situation in your business model.

Question 4: A Quality Assurance (QA) Program is essential to the success of any business. In establishing your grocery delivery business, what are some of the Quality Control (QC) processes that you envision employing? Why? Provide examples of potential metrics. Justify your choices.

Question 5: Efficiency is a critical element both in terms of individuals and machinery in any business. Describe some efficiency measures that you would implement in your grocery delivery business. What are the analysis tools that you would utilize to determine the effectiveness of these efficiency measures?

Final Project

In your written component of the Final Project, you will analyze an argument in relation to a specific issue. Then, you will respond to that argument by providing a counterargument.

Argument Choice: Locke, J. (1689). Of the state of war. In Second treatise of government. Retrieved from
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/7370/7370-h/7370-h.htm

Complete the steps below based on your chosen argument:

Step One: Evaluate the Argument
Identify the issue that is addressed in the argument.
Explain the argument and identify the premises and conclusions.
Evaluate the argument.
If the argument has a deductive component, is it valid and sound? Why?
If the argument has an inductive component, is it strong or weak? Why?
Remember that arguments often contain both inductive and deductive components. Do your best to identify all the arguments that are used to support the position presented in the piece.

Step Two: Create a Counterargument
Create a counterargument to the original argument.
Present premises that support your own position while also pointing out the weaknesses inherent in the original argument. Avoid the use of fallacious reasoning and anecdotal evidence.
If you are using inductive arguments, make sure that they are strong. If you are using deductive arguments, make sure that they are valid and attempt to provide sound premises.
Use factual evidence and/or logical support from at least three scholarly sources to support your argument.
This might require you to play “devil’s advocate.” Remember that you do not need to agree with the position for which you argue. You may need to take on an opposing position to your own personal view and argue from that position. Critical thinkers are able to take on opposing perspectives and identify the strongest arguments from those perspectives.
