Strategic Human Resource Management case study Analysis – Disney

1. Outline the key elements of Disney’s HR strategy. How are Disney’s HR strategy and corporate strategy linked? (20%)
2. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Disney’s HR strategy from the perspective of the employee, the company, and the guest. (50%)
3. If you were a consultant to Disney, what advice would you give them on how to develop their HR strategy in the future? (30%)

Assessment criteria:
Very advanced understanding of the case study.
Exceptionally clear and academic writing style.
Very insightful analysis of the case scenario.
Critical engagement with the relevant literature.
Each question answered fully.
Accurately referenced using primarily high-quality peer-reviewed sources and relevant policy/practitioner sources such as the CIPD.
An exceptionally coherent and cogent line of argument.
Complete and accurate list of references.

The work demonstrates a mastery of the subject that goes well beyond basic reading of the case study to critically evaluate the case in relation to the relevant academic/policy literature. The argument presented is well developed, complete and coherent, and is written in a compelling manner. Perhaps most importantly, an great work is characterised by a spark of creativity, or by new ideas and insights that emerge from the student’s reading.

Q&A:
1. Should I use a framework, theory or model to structure my answer to question 1?
You could use an appropriate framework if you feel this would help you structure your answer but the focus of the question is on outlining the key elements of the HR strategy and how it is linked to the corporate strategy.

2.Should I read more articles about the Disney company in order to complete the assignment?
There is no expectation that you should read more about Disney specifically as everything you need for your answer is in the case. However, if you want to read more then please do go ahead but remember you need to focus your answer on analysing the case material and linking this to relevant theories and frameworks. I would advise against using up too much wordcount in describing Disney based on additional material which would reduce the amount of space you have to talk about the relevant theories.
3. How do I know what the ‘key elements’ of an HR strategy are?
If you look at Chapter 7 of the textbook [please reference the book ‘Strategic Human Resource Management’ (Truss, C., David, M., Kelliher, C.)], there is further information about HR strategy from both a content and a process perspective. In analysing the Disney case study for this assignment, the focus is on the content issues in relation to questions 1 and 2 and potentially on both process and content for question 3, depending on how you choose to answer this. It is important to read the case study carefully, including the exhibits at the end, and think about what the case says about Disney’s overarching strategic approach to managing people.

4. Do I have to read other articles to get a good mark?
You should aim to read some other relevant material such as journal articles and practitioner material from sources such as the CIPD website. Lists of suggested further reading are available on Study Direct and there are also references in each book chapter that you might find useful. I don’t want to be too prescriptive about what you should read as this element of independent research is an important part of completing the assignment!

Some important supplement:
1. please reference and use the theory or tools from the book ‘Strategic Human Resource Management’ (Truss, C., David, M., Kelliher, C.). Chapters 1-8 are all relevant but particularly chapters 5, 6 and 7! this book is important. And look the lecture slide I upload.

US History 1812-1914

Generally speaking, an essay that answers the question asked but in a broad general way emphasizing only some specifics, does not answer all parts of the question and/or is perhaps in need of better writing and/or organization will probably earn a “C”. A “B” essay is a very good essay but one that could perhaps use more specifics and/or more analysis and/or tighter writing and organization. An “A” essay is one that is well written and organized, answers the question in full, and uses many specific examples. You will get a “D” if your essay has inaccurate information, and/or is poorly written and organized, and/or if it omits parts of the question asked. You will get an “F” if you fail to answer the question asked or if your writing is extremely poor or if you write very little.

Students often wonder how much they should write to get an “A.” Keep in mind that this is intended to be a long essay where you are given three hours to write, and is not a short answer exam. These essays are not intended to be short answer exams like the other assignments, but rather are full essays and should take the majority of the period to complete. It is by default an open book and open note exam, so you need to be specific in your examples and avoid general or vague statements. While you will be graded more on content then on length, generally speaking (and from my experience) an “A” exam tends to be at least five double spaced pages (12pt Times New Roman, 1” margins). In other words, don’t expect to get a very good grade if you write only a couple pages or if you are not using the time allowed for the exam wisely. In short, an “A” means outstanding, a “B” means very good, a “C” means satisfactory, a “D” means unsatisfactory, and an “F” means you failed to answer the question. All essays will be graded in 5% increments with 100% being an A+, 95% an A, 90% a B+/A-, and so on. Even though this is an open book exam by default, I suggest that you study the questions and discussion forums, and make notes beforehand on what you would write about if you received that question on the exam. Three hours can go by very quickly if you are unprepared.

Midterm Essay Topics

1. War of 1812.
2. Reasons for economic growth during the first half of the nineteenth century.
3. Factors that contributed to sectionalism 1815-1860.
4. Westward expansion 1815-1850 and the Mexican War of 1846.
5. Reform movements through the Civil War.

Write 4 to 5 pages for each topic. Don’t cite any source. Use your own knowledge and write in your own words.

Where does Heidegger’s early metaphysics show the influence of Christian thinking (primarily Aquinas), and where does it oppose it?

Or: Where does Heidegger’s early metaphysics show the influence of Christian thinking (primarily Aquinas), and where does it oppose it?

This must be a detailed examination of the file introduction to Heidegger, from here: Heidegger, Martin, Introduction to Metaphysics, Transl. G. Fried and R. Polt, New Haven: Yale University Press, 2000. We will be reading Chapter One ‘The Fundamental Question of Metaphysics’, 1-55.

The essay must look primarily at where Heidegger’s shows himself to be influenced by Aquinas, and where he opposes Aquinas.

THE TEXT THAT MUST BE EXAMINED FOR HEIDEGGER, AND SOME BASIC IDEAS OF THE VIEW OF AQUINAS (WHICH WILL NEED TO BE HUGELY EXPANDED UPON), ARE BOTH ATTACHED.

Use only the Introduction to metaphysics – picking out parts what agrees and disagree with Aquinas.

Use other sources, particularly Caputo – see here
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=dbSjuU8y5OMC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_atb#v=onepage&q=aquinas&f=false
Sources like this should be used to give scholarly ideas of how Heidegger relates to Aquinas in terms of the early metaphysics expressed in: Heidegger, Martin, Introduction to Metaphysics, Transl. G. Fried and R. Polt, New Haven: Yale University Press, 2000. We will be reading Chapter One ‘The Fundamental Question of Metaphysics’, 1-55.

The wider sources should be used to add the ideas, but the essay most focus in detail on comparisons in the ideas of Heidegger, only in that introduction document, and those of Aquinas.

The Question of being is fundamental to Heidegger’s thought and must be examined in detail and related to Aquinas and how they disagree on this

For example Heidegger has a sense of the abstract and common being, whereas Aquinas determined being as the being of an existent thing.
Heidegger didn’t see the need or possibility of anything like God beyond the question of being, but he did borrowed many ideas from Christianity. However, Heidegger did make a marked distinction between Christianity and what he was doing

Aquinas plays with the idea of common being and Aristotle uses it but Heidegger does not- says being involves experiencing individual things. For Heidegger being is something that is presupposed. Instead Heidegger starts with why is there something rather than nothing- he considers God traditional inherited answer but believes that in true philosophy you’ve got to work that out

Aquinas and Heidegger Belong to each other historically, but work on totally different concepts – Heidegger is setting philosophy apart from theology, but his basic concepts are actually set out by Aquinas. Heidegger read Aquinas very carefully and this is reflected in them holding some shared concepts. Unlike the Greeks Heidegger does believe in creation so uses the metaphysics to turn it into a strong sense of being.

History of Animation

Write a research paper that compares two animation topics. This comparison should be a 2000 word research paper.
One topic should be from the last paper.
The second topic should be a new topic that is to compliment your first topic. It should be something that related to the first topic. The goal is to choose a second topic that demonstrates what is unique and interesting about both topics, and helps illuminate something about the history and art of animation.
Focus on what is unique about the work. While your writing can be to some extend biographical, you should focus mainly on analysis and discussion of the work. Use ideas from your research to guide your discussion of each artist. As with your first paper, you should find three sources for your second topic. They should follow the same pattern as with your first paper.
– One source (your ”starter source”) may be from Wikipedia.
– One source (your “second source”) must be a book from the suggested Texts list.
– The third source (your “open source”) can be anything you find directly relates to the topic.
Your second source or your third source may be the same as what you used in the first paper. However, you must include at least one new source that you did not use in the first paper.
You should make at least two major points of comparison between your two topics. These can be things that are similar or things that are different.
Cite all sources following the MLA method.
