Music

MSC 1003
2-3 Pages

Below is a list of questions. These questions are based on topics that we covered throughout the semester, but are prompts that also encourage you to bring your own insights and observations to the material. In complete sentences, please select any 2 of the following 5 prompts to answer. For each of the 2 essays that you will answer separately, you should plan to write between 1 and 1.5 pages per essay, for a total of 2 to 3 pages. (It is fine if you go onto a 4th page.) Your responses should be typed in Times New Roman Font (size 12) with 1-inch margins.

Potential Essay Questions:

1. Selecting any 3 of the musical examples weve looked at throughout the semester, explain how each work was a mirror of the society in which it was composed. Be sure to identify the period in which the work was written, as well as some defining musical features of each piece. (The pieces you select should come from at least 2 different periods; i.e. Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, or Modernism and Postmodernism)

2. If you were making a soundtrack to your life, which pieces of music or songs would you pick? Why? Include at least 2 pieces that we talked about in class, although the other 4-6 pieces do not have to be things weve discussed in this class.

3. The 20th century saw a proliferation of styles and genres as composers struggled to find a new musical language to express not only their experiences, but to describe the world around them. Pick 2 of the artists/groups we discussed and comment on their work. What do you like about it? What do you not like? You can feel free to incorporate perspectives from modernist or postmodern composers, The Beatles, or Jazz musicians like Louie Armstrong, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane.

4. Watch either Alfred Hitchcocks Vertigo or The Birds and discuss how you hear him using music throughout these films. Be able to discuss at least 2 instances where does he use diegetic music versus non-diegetic music. Does he use music diegetically or non-diegetically in these scenes? Why do you think Hitchcock made the choices he did regarding sound and music?

Possible films:
Vertigo (DVD 694, available on reserve at Baruch LibraryHeld under the class MSC 3034, Music in Film)
The Birds (DVD 102, available on reserve at Baruch LibraryHeld under the class MSC 3034, Music in Film)
*You can also rent either of these films for $2.99 on Amazon, streaming for 24 hours

5. You are a good friend of John Cages, and he would like to collaborate with you on a piece. Hes left all the artistic decisions up to you. What kind of piece would you write? Describe the pieces philosophy (i.e. what is it trying to show/prove/argue/disprove?). What kinds of instruments will you use in your piece? Or will there be instruments at all? The answer to this question could involve anything from designing your own graphic notation to outlining the pieces components in a 1-page response.

Recruiting or Cultivating

The paper this week, “Recruiting or Cultivating?” is another opportunity to use critical thinking with analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Remember these assignments are designed to help doctoral students move past presenting facts and comparing ideas into forming an argument. Please take a moment to review Bloom’s Taxonomy as an example of developing a cognitive argument (attached).
Over the last two weeks, we have been examining the roles of recruitment and cultivation in discipleship. Through our discussion, we have learned there are several different approaches to these two models of helping disciples become more holistic in following Jesus through service.
TWO MODELS
• Recruiting focuses on first enlisting workers and then discipling them later as part of ongoing development.
• Cultivating focuses on discipleship first and out of that discipleship Christians naturally volunteer for service.
These are two different models of obtaining volunteers.
ARGUMENT
This assignment is in the form of an argument designed to support one model or the other or a combination of the two models.
• As an argument, the introduction should contain a thesis statement which should summarize the argument stance in one sentence.
• The argument is then threaded throughout each section culminating in section four with an explanation of your stance. State the stance and then support the stance with logical reasoning supported by viable resources.
• The paper should then end with a formal conclusion reviewing the basic points of the flow of the essay including the argument stance.
OUTLINE:
Title Page
Introduction with thesis statement
Do not use Introduction as a heading.
Explanation of the Two Models
This is a description of the relationship or lack thereof between recruiting and cultivating. Are these models opposed to one another, or can they work in harmony with one another? Remember, the focus is on recruiting volunteers not recruiting disciples. Start with the assumption that the person being recruited is already a believer. Do not analyze using the example of Jesus initially calling his disciples. Picture a church filled with believers and explain the process of obtaining volunteers through the two models.
Ethics and the Two Models
This section is an explanation regarding the ethical considerations surrounding these two models. There are potential ethical problems with each model so present examples for each model (not just recruiting).
Leadership and the Two Models
This section describes the role of the leader in recruiting/cultivating disciples. Use contemporary leadership theory from Northouse to identify, compare, and contrast the different leadership roles within each model. To what extent should the leader be involved? Be sure to include an explanation on whether the leadership role of obtaining volunteers changes with the church size.
Ministry Effectiveness and the Two Models
The final section is research-based speculation on the potential influence that each of these models will have on ministry effectiveness. This is the place to further develop and explain the resolution of the argument. Clearly present your resolution on whether recruiting or cultivating (or both) should be used in obtaining volunteers in a ministry. State your case and then support it with viable resources. If the paper takes the stance of the two models working together, be sure to explain their collaboration in detail.

Other Guidelines:
• Remember that this is a paper on leadership/discipleship in the realm of recruiting and cultivating within Christian ministries. Be sure to write the paper with discipleship and leadership at the forefront of the research.
• I noticed from the first two papers, that some learners are struggling with proper APA format. A simple way to solve the formatting issue is to just type over the APA template. For example, on the title page back off the place where it says “paper title” and type in the title. This practice will solve a majority of the formatting issues with APA style.
• Remember to use academic voice and not first or second voice in the essay.
• Substantiate your writing with solid resources from the GCU library. Avoid the use of internet sites as the main resources of the paper.
• Be sure to use your critical thinking skills on this essay. Present facts but then use analysis, evaluation, and synthesis in the flow of the paper.
Any other research is welcomed as long as it is scholarly material.
