Week 1: Introduction to Java – i Lab

Week 1: Introduction to Java – i Lab
iLab 1 of 6: Environment Setup

Connect to the iLab here.

Submit your assignment to the Dropbox located on the silver tab at the top of this page.
(See Syllabus Due Dates for Assignments & Exams for due dates.)

i L A B O V E R V I E W

Scenario and Summary

In this lab you will learn how to use the Java Software Development Kit (SDK) with the Eclipse programming tool. In addition, you will create three simple Java programs.
Deliverables
Program files for each of the following three programs.
ShowEscapeSequences.java
Circle.java
PracticeArithmeticOperators.java
At the beginning of ALL your programs, put a comment box that includes the program name, your name, and a brief description of the program.
Example:
/***********************************************************************
Program Name: ProgramName.java
Programmer’s Name: Student Name
Program Description: Describe here what this program will do
***********************************************************************/
How to submit your assignment:
The programs MUST have the same names as the assignment title (ShowEscapeSequences, Circle, and PracticeArithmeticOperators).
Each Java source file (*.java) must include a corresponding class file (*.class) program as evidence of success.
In addition to the program source code files and byte code files, put all your program source code files and screen shots of your program output files into a Word document.
You must use a zipped folder to send your weekly assignment to the Dropbox. Do not send subfolders within your zipped folder. Place ALL of the .java and .class files for the week into the one zipped folder. The zip folder should be named: CIS355A_YourLastName_iLab_Week1, and this zip folder will contain all the weekly programming assignments.

Environment Setup (required, but not graded)

The iLab has all the software that you will need for this course, but many students prefer to download and install the software on their own computers. If you choose to do this, you will need to download and install the following:
Java Standard Edition: You must install version 5 or later. This is also called Java SE, Java 5 SE, JDK 5.x, or JSDK 5.x. This must be installed first. You can download Java free of charge fromhttp://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/index.html.
You should also review the following tutorials.
Eclipse Installation: Eclipse is a programming editor. If you prefer, you can use Windows Notepad or another programming editor. If you decide to use Eclipse, it must be installed after you install the JDK.
Running Eclipse: This tutorial shows you how to use Eclipse that you just installed. If you are using Eclipse under Citrix, you must choose the F: directory as your workspace directory.
STEP 1: ShowEscapeSequences (10 points)

Write a Java program named ShowEscapeSequences.java that displays the following.

STEP 2: Circle (15 points)

Write an application called Circle.java that inputs from the user the radius of a circle as an integer and prints the circle’s diameter, circumference, and area. Use the example program and GUI technique message dialog box shown in the Week 1 Lecture.
Use the following formulas.
diameter = 2 * radius
circumference = 2 * Math.PI * radius
area = Math.PI * radius * radius
Use the predefined constant Math.PI for your calculation. This constant is more precise than the value 3.14159. Class Math is defined in the java.lang package so you do not need to import it.

The Final Project should demonstrate an understanding of the reading assignments, class discussions, as well as your own research and application of new knowledge. It must contain the following elements:
A description of why this population group is vulnerable and in desperate need for help within your community.
Identification of the health service needs of this special population.
In order to support your claims and opinions, cite statistical data obtained from the county health department, state health department, and/or other organizations and agencies.

Design a model program or service, which is needed to improve the lives of your chosen population within your community. Remember to design a new program not currently existent within your community. In your design, include the following:
A description of the continuum of care level (preventive, treatment, or long-term care) your program or service fall into and how it meets the needs of your selected group.
An analysis of the delivery modes of health services to be included.
A discussion regarding the multidisciplinary approach that is incorporated into the program.
An analysis of the role of legal and ethical requirements in the design of the program.

Be detailed and convincing in describing the above elements, as you are attempting to win as much support from the attending members as possible.

Identify a minimum of two community agencies/organizations you would like to partner with in some way(s) in order to implement this program/service. Explain why you would like to partner with these organizations and how can they help or benefit you with the implementation of your program/service.

Analyze the current funding sources for provision of health services to this special population. Discuss the use of integrated funding. Part A: Requirements – DIVE Scoring Program

Part A: Requirements – DIVE Scoring Program
Your mission: The state diving commission wants to computerize the scoring at its diving competitions. You’ve been hired to write a program to automate the scoring of dives. Following are the requirements for the program.
After each dive, the user will be prompted to enter the:
diver’s name;
diver’s city;
degree of difficulty (ranges from 1.00 to 1.67); and
scores from five judges (scores can range from 0 to 10).
If an invalid score is entered, an error message will be displayed. The user will be prompted for the score repeatedly until a valid score is entered.
The program will then display the following information:
Diver’s name
Diver’s city
Dive final score: This is calculated by dropping the highest and lowest of the five judges’ scores. The remaining three scores are added together, and the result is divided by 3 and then multiplied by the degree of difficulty.
The program will then prompt the user if she/he wants to process another dive. The user can type “Y” or “y” to continue, and “N” or “n” to quit.
Sample output:
Diver’s name: Sue Jones
Diver’s city: Dallas
Dive degree of difficulty: 1.9
Invalid degree of difficulty – Please reenter (Valid Range: 1 – 1.67)
Dive degree of difficulty: 2
Invalid degree of difficulty – Please reenter (Valid Range: 1 – 1.67)
Dive degree of difficulty: 1.2
Judge #1 score: 45
Invalid score – Please reenter (Valid Range: 0 – 10)
Judge #1 score: 3
Judge #2 score: 4.5
Judge #3 score 6.7
Judge #4 score 89
Invalid score – Please reenter (Valid Range: 0 – 10)
Judge #4 score 8
Judge #5 score: 9.2
Diver: Sue Jones
City: Dallas
Dive score: 7.68
Do you want to process another dive (Y/N)? y
Diver’s name: Dave Smith
Diver’s city: Houston
Dive degree of difficulty: 1.1
Judge #1 score: 5.7
Judge #2 score: 6.8
Judge #3 score:: 7.6
Judge #4 score: 8.7
Judge #5 score: 6.7
Diver: Dave Smith
City: Houston
Dive score: 7.74
Do you want to process another diver (Y/N)? N
Tips
Best practice: Note that a good way to implement the code is to write a first version for only a single dive without validating input. Put yourself in the place of the program. What steps would you personally need to perform in order to process a single dive yourself? Write out those steps on paper as pseudocode and/or in Visual Studio as C# comments, and then implement them one by one, testing as you go. After you have a single dive process working, implement one of the input validations, or the outer loop that repeats the whole process. Whichever you choose, remember to not write too much at one time. Always add and test functionality incrementally!
Pseudocode: Although there are several valid ways to write the program, the following is an outline of one way to design the overall logic.

Declare and initialize variables: name, city, judge score, highest score, lowest score, total score
Loop while there are dives to process
Get diver’s name and city
Get degree of difficulty
Loop to validate input
End Loop
Loop five times to get judges’ scores
Loop to Validate input
End Loop
Update highest and lowest scores if need be
Add score to total score
End Loop Calculate the final score (subtract highest and lowest scores from total score, divide by 3, multiply by degree of difficulty) Display the diver’s information and final dive score Prompt the user if he or she wants to process another dive
End-Loop
