You have just been hired to the ABC company as its new vice president of strategic planning.

Weekly tasks or assignments (Individual or Group Projects) will be due by Monday and late submissions will be assigned a late penalty in accordance with the late penalty policy found in the syllabus. NOTE: All submission posting times are based on midnight Central Time.
Key Assignment
You have just been hired to the ABC company as its new vice president of strategic planning. The corporation is a conglomerate with divisions in the auto industry, pharmaceutical industry, home movie rental industry, and mass merchandiser industry. The corporation has seen lackluster performance in recent years because its competitors seem to have a more effective strategy, and, at the same time, business and economic conditions have changed appreciably from what they were 5 years earlier.
Given the multibillion dollar size of the corporation and the fact that it is a conglomerate with a very diverse portfolio of companies in varying industries, the CEO whom you report to has already given you permission to hire a staff of recent MBAs to assist your efforts. You recently completed the interviewing and hired four people with minimal real business experience.
In coming months, you and your team will be creating a completely new—and, presumably, more effective—strategic plan. You plan to begin by holding a kick-off meeting with your team.
Part 1
Deliverable Length: 1,200–1,500 words
To feel confident that all of the employees in your strategic planning team understand all that you have taught them, you require each to prepare a streamlined version of the key elements of a company’s strategic plan. You require each employee to prepare the following sections of a strategic plan for any one of the corporation’s four divisions. You intentionally gave them no information about any of the divisions and suggest that they pick a current leading competitor in that field, and are to assume they are in that company as they write the following parts of a strategic plan:
Mission statement (simply copying an existing real company’s mission is unacceptable)
Industry analysis
SWOT analysis
2 perceptual maps
Choose any 2 pairs of criteria that you think are important to plot.
Explain why you picked those 2 pairs of criteria.
The 4 corporate industries that each employee can pick from are the following:
Auto industry
Pharmaceutical industry
Mass merchandiser industry
Home movie rental industry
Please submit your assignment.

AJS 552 Week 2 Policing in Kelsey Budget Report

AJS 552 Week 2 Policing in Kelsey Budget Report
Resources: Review the City of Kelsey under the Government tab of the Virtual Organization site. Access the public records of Kelsey under the City Government to familiarize yourself with the city’s budget and financial report.

Review the following scenario:

You work as a budget director for the mayor of Kelsey and recently you have been getting numerous complaints from citizens about the increase in crime in the City of Kelsey and public demands for more police officers. The population of Kelsey has grown, creating increases in crime.

The mayor has communicated to you as the budget director that this past year is the highest increase in crime in the city’s history. The federal government has reduced the federal pass-through money for the state, and the budgeting group needs to revamp the budget for the coming year. In addition to the limited budget, there has been a recent budgetary reform at the federal level, which has put additional pressure on local police agencies to use the federal money before it expires. The state Chief’s of Police Association is lobbying the state for a 15% public safety tax for a temporary 3-year period in order to make up the deficit. The state legislature and local governments are wary of adding any additional new taxes on citizens. In addition, the state’s Sierra Club organization is putting pressure on state and local government to hire less police officers, build more prisons, and develop the state’s infrastructure.

The mayor has pointed out that the likelihood of getting any increase in tax money from the state is slim. The mayor has called a meeting with your budget staff, the Chief of Police and staff to address the following issues and come up with a solution that is politically feasible. In the meeting, the mayor reminds them that if he or she is not re-elected the new incumbent will replace their jobs.

Create a 1,400-1,750- word report in which you, as the budget officer, which details the following:
How the changes affect the fiscal cycle of your budgeting.
How the preparation, execution, and evaluation of the budgeting cycle would change.
Your budgeting approach based on the changes and the reasons.
Differences of the chosen budgeting approach from those not used.
A plan to address the crime issue.
Summary of the cost-benefit analysis of your plan.

Week 8 DQ 1

:
Week 8 DQ 1
· Person-centered thinking places people and their capabilities, interests, and gifts before their diagnoses or treatments. For example, a child diagnosed with cerebral palsy would not be called “the child in the wheelchair” but instead would be recognized by the same traits that any other child might be: “Tommy likes trains and always remembers everyone’s birthday.” Could this practice of person-centered thinking be beneficial to other areas of diversity as well? Why?
Week 8 DQ 2
· Ageism refers to prejudice and prejudicial treatment against people older than a certain age (usually in the mid-50s). What do you think is the most common expression of ageism?
Week 8 DQ 3
· Inclusion is a term used in the disability community that promotes the participation and acceptance of people with disabilities in communities and events without restrictions or limitations. Do you think this is something that should be encouraged? Why or why not?
Week 8 DQ 4
· If a person in a wheelchair is in a building that has high accessibility, does he or she still have a disability? In other words, does disability only exist in spaces where a person is not able to function or move around like a typically functioning person?
Week 8 DQ 5
· Do you feel the changes brought about by ADA were adequate? Why or why not?
Week 8 DQ 6
· In U.S. society, the elderly tend to be less and less visible in mainstream activities, in organizations, and in the workplace. One theory assigns this to ageism. Do you think that is the best explanation for this phenomenon? If yes, why do you think so? If not, what do you think is the best alternative explanation?

Week 8 DQ 7
· How do you feel about the way U.S. society treats the elderly?

Course Project B

Course Project B
Clark Paints: The Production Department has been investigating possible ways to trim total production costs. One possibility currently being examined is to make the paint cans instead of purchasing them. The equipment needed would cost $200,000, with a disposal value of $40,000, and it would be able to produce 5,500,000 cans over the life of the machinery. The Production Department estimates that approximately 1,100,000 cans would be needed for each of the next five years.

The company would hire three new employees. These three individuals would be full-time employees, working 2,000 hours per year and earning $12.00 per hour. They would also receive the same benefits as other production employees, 18% of wages, in addition to $2,500 of health benefits.

It is estimated that the raw materials will cost 25¢ per can and that other variable costs would be 5¢ per can. Since there is currently unused space in the factory, no additional fixed costs would be incurred if this proposal is accepted.

It is expected that cans would cost 45¢ each if purchased from the current supplier. The company’s minimum rate of return (hurdle rate) has been determined to be 12% for all new projects, and the current tax rate of 35% is anticipated to remain unchanged. The pricing for a gallon of paint, as well as the number of units sold, will not be affected by this decision. The unit-of-production depreciation method would be used if the new equipment is purchased.

Required:
1. Based on the above information and using Excel, calculate the following items for this proposed equipment purchase:

Annual cash flows over the expected life of the equipment;
Payback period;
Annual rate of return;
Net present value; and
Internal rate of return.
2. Would you recommend the acceptance of this proposal? Why or why not? Prepare a short, double-spaced Word paper elaborating and supporting your answer.

Return on Investment and Residual Income

Portia Carter is the president of a company that owns six multiplex movie theaters. Carter has delegated decision-making authority to the theater managers for all decisions except those relating to capital expenditures and film selection. The theater managers’ compensation depends on the profitability of their theaters. Max Burgman, the manager of the Park Theater, had the following master budget and actual results for the month.
Master Actual
Budget Results
Tickets sold 120,000 480,000
Revenue–tickets $ 840,000 $ 880,000
Revenue–concessions 480,000 330,000
Total revenue $1,320,000 $1,210,000
Controllable variable costs
Concessions 120,000 99,000
Direct labor 420,000 330,000
Variable overhead 540,000 550,000
Contribution margin $ 240,000 $ 231,000
Controllable fixed costs
Rent 55,000 55,000
Other administrative expenses 45,000 50,000
Theater operating income $ 140,000 $ 126,000

1. Assuming that the theaters are profit centers, prepare a performance report for the Park Theater using the chart below. Include a flexible budget. Determine the variances between actual results, the flexible budget, and the master budget. (25 points)

Actual Flexible Master
Results Variance Budget Variance Budget
Tickets sold 110,000 ( ) 120,000
Revenue–tickets $ 880,000 ( ) ( ) $ 840,000
