Discussion Board 4 – International Business

For many global companies, China represents a very attractive market in terms of size and growth rate. Yet, it ranks lower in terms of economic freedom and higher in political risk than other country markets because it has a communist government. Despite these risks, there are hundreds of companies that have established manufacturing operations in China. This is due in large part to the Chinese government making sales in China contingent on a company’s willingness to locate production there. The government wants Chinese companies to learn modern management skills from non-Chinese companies and acquire technology. Some observers believe that when Western companies agree to such conditions, they are bargaining away important industry knowledge in exchange for sales today.

1. Should Boeing and other companies go along with China’s terms? Defend and support your answer.
2. Should they risk losing sales by refusing to transfer technology?

Target Market Worksheet – DOVE MILK CHOCOLATE BARS

Instructions: Using your product for the Marketing Strategy Analysis Project, complete the Target Market Worksheet below. You will use this information to write the target market section next week and your final Marketing Strategy Analysis report during Week Six. Keep in mind that you are analyzing a current target market for this product; not creating a new one. The company may have many different target markets, but you will choose only one.

Define one target market for DOVE MILK CHOCOLATE BARS using all bases of segmentation described in the textbook beginning on page 123. Remember that a target market description describes the people in the target market. Product descriptions do not belong in this section.

Remember that all people in this target market geography need to be able to be reached using the same marketing mix (product, price, promotion, & place). If any of these aspects need to be changed to reach part of the defined group of people, the target market description is too broad.

For each answer below, explain your rationale for the choice in 2-3 sentences.

essay

2. Essay (1500 words) – 40%

Students will be given essay questions on week 3. Many of the texts cited in the weekly ‘Further Readings’ will be useful in helping you compose your essay. Do not limit yourself to these texts, however, as your ability to identify relevant and appropriate resources will form part of the assessment criteria. Ensure you accurately reference all books and articles that you use in your analysis.

If you are unsure about any aspect of this assessment item, please consult your tutor for advice, and leave yourself plenty of time to act on this advice. This task will be discussed further in class and you will have an opportunity to ask questions. If you still do not understand what is required it is your responsibility to seek clarification from your tutor.

Syntax, spelling and general presentation will be taken into account in the awarding of grades for any written assessment. Students must also refer to the School of Humanities Style Manual for advice on referencing, as well as on grammar and essay-writing conventions. Your essay should be submitted in the Transnational Migration assignment box in the foyer of building 5. This item of assessment is due at 4pm on Wednesday

Other assessment criteria:

1. Relevance: The content of your essay should be relevant to the case study you’ve selected. Don’t include material not directly related to it.

2. Well-informed: Your essay should be well-informed. Read as widely as possible. As a rule of thumb, an essay should cite at least 10 academic sources.
NB: Websites are not appropriate sources for a university essay. Do not use them!

3. Your own thinking and your own words: Familiarity with the literature is essential but not sufficient. Your essay must be based on your own thinking. Only a minor part should be direct quotations or material that is merely a modified or condensed version of another author’s work. Extensive quotation or paraphrase is not acceptable, as it doesn’t evidence your thinking about your reading.

4. Organisation: Your essay should be constructed in a way that shows the logical steps in your argument, with data from various sources being brought in as appropriate. Remember that paragraphs are the organisational ‘building blocks’ of an essay and that each paragraph should have a main idea or theme. Good organisation can only be achieved by careful planning and frequent re-reading and revision of your writing as you proceed. Authors who haven’t taken the trouble to review and revise their essays before submitting seldom succeed.

5. A balance between abstraction and concreteness: Avoid the extremes of getting bogged down in masses of factual detail or of floating off into realms of pure abstraction. The essential point of writing an essay is to grapple with the relation between theories and facts — to think about how best to understand the facts.

6. Referencing: Never quote or use an author’s work in any way without acknowledging it. You must always indicate where in the literature you obtained the facts, concepts and points of view which you discuss in your essay. When quoting an author verbatim always show this with quotation marks and a citation. You must also indicate where a summary of someone else’s work or ideas ends and your own discussion is resumed.

7. Plagiarism: To quote or paraphrase another person’s work without acknowledgment is plagiarism, i.e. the presentation of the words and ideas of another writer as your own. Plagiarism demonstrates that the writer has failed to think independently, and it is unjust to writers who do honest work. Students submitting plagiarised work may fail the course.

NB:

You May Not Use Sources from the Internet (including Wikipedia) or Dictionary Definitions for your essay!

Accounting Scenario

Excel spreadsheet & 1-2 page paper

The Ski Pro Corporation, which produces and sells to wholesalers a highly successful line of water skis, has decided to diversify to stabilize sales throughout the year. The company is considering the production of cross-country skis.

After considerable research, a cross-country ski line has been developed. Because of the conservative nature of the company management, however, Minnetonka’s president has decided to introduce only one type of the new ski for this coming winter. If the product is a success, further expansion in future years will be initiated.

The ski selected is a mass-market ski with a special binding. It will be sold to wholesalers for $80 per pair. Because of availability capacity, no additional fixed charges will be incurred to produce the skis. A $100,000 fixed charge will be absorbed by the skis, however, to allocate a fair share of the company’s present fixed costs to the new product.

Using the estimated sales and production of 10,000 pairs of skis as the expected volume, the accounting department has developed the following cost per pair of skis and bindings:

Direct Labor: $35
Direct Material: $30
Total Overhead: $15
Total: $80

Ski Pro has approached a subcontractor to discuss the possibility of purchasing the bindings. The purchase price of the bindings from the subcontractor would be $5.25 per binding, or $10.50 per pair. If the Ski Pro Corporation accepts the purchase proposal, it is predicted that direct-labor and variable-overhead costs would be reduced by 10% and direct-material costs would be reduced by 20%.

Write a 1–2 page paper, and create a spreadsheet that answers the following questions:

Should the Ski Pro Corporation make or buy the bindings? Show calculations to support your answer.
What would be the maximum purchase price acceptable to the Ski Pro Corporation for the bindings? Support your answer with an appropriate explanation.
Instead of sales of 10,000 pairs of skis, revised estimates show sales volume at 12,500 pairs. At this new volume, additional equipment, at an annual rental of $10,000 must be acquired to manufacture the bindings. This incremental cost would be the only additional fixed cost required even if sales increased to 30,000 pairs. (This 30,000 level is the goal for the third year of production.) Under these circumstances, should the Ski Pro Corporation make or buy the bindings? Show calculations to support your answer.
What qualitative factors (that is, issues with vendors, customers, or within the product itself) should the Ski Pro Corporation consider in determining whether they should make or buy the bindings?

Grading Criteria:

Compare either \” I am Legend\” by Richard Matheson to a more \”literary\” text

Doing this will involve defining at least briefly what a “literary” text is. You can, of course, come up with a definition of your own or employ the definitions of others — dictionaries, quotations, etc, etc.

Here’s one way of writing the paper (feel free to develop alternative approaches, of course):

Introduction/Thesis (First paragraph — about 1/2 a page):

Define “literature” and introduce the two texts you will be discussing – either “I am Legend” and at least one other more “literary” text. You will also need a thesis, one that indicates your position on what makes a text truly literary and whether you think either “I am Legend” or “Jaws” qualifies as such.

Middle Section of Paper: (3-4 pages)

This section could have two parts — a brief discussion of a “literary” text and a longer one of either “I am Legend”. It is okay to talk about the literary text in general terms — you certainly don’t need to reread it, though you might look at the Wikipedia article on it and do some additional research: you do need to go into some detail about either “I am Legend”, however: quote the text in support of your argument. You also need to cite any outside sources you use, including Wikipedia, Sparknotes, and the like.

Conclusion: (about 1/2 a page)

Conclusions should go beyond merely summarizing what has been argued previously in the paper. The best thing to do is revisit your thesis and discuss its implications. For example, if you argued that “I am Legend” was really not all that different from “The Old Man and the Sea” or “Moby-Dick” and that, therefore, the line between literary/non literary is not always easy to see, then in your conclusion you might discuss how students should be assigned a broader range of texts in literature classes, not just the ones that are not usually taught.

Product Assignment

Using your product (Dove Milk Chocolate) for the Marketing Strategy Analysis Project, complete the Product section of the analysis by analyzing the information below. Provide the information for each section below in a separate section, clearly labeled with an appropriate subheading (i.e. Product Classification, Branding, etc.).

1. Choose the Product Classification that defines this product based on the previously defined target
market. Explain your rationale. Choose between Convenience Product, Heterogeneous Shopping Product, Homogenous Shopping Product, Specialty Product, or Unsought Product. Textbook page 158.

2. Describe the Branding used for this product. Textbook page 162.
a. Does this product use family and/or individual branding? Explain your rationale.
b. Describe the brand name and brand mark. Explain each of them in detail, including colors, designs, and text.
c. Discuss the level of brand loyalty that the target market has for this brand.

Do not confuse Branding with Packaging & Labeling. Branding elements are often used on packaging, but a picture or phrase on a package is not necessarily a brand mark.

3. Describe the Packaging for this product. Textbook page 166.
a. Explain how the package is used for each of the following (if one or more of the below items is not used for this function, explain why not):
(1) Containing and Protecting the Product
(2) Promoting the Product
(3) Facilitating Storage, Use, and Convenience
(4) Facilitating Recycling and Reducing Environmental Damage
b. Explain the type of labeling used for this product (persuasive or informational). Provide your reasoning.

4. What stage in the Product Life Cycle does this product category fall into? Textbook page 181. Choose only one stage, and explain your rationale. Note: Identify the product category before determining the stage in the product life cycle. See the VCR example on page 185 in the textbook.

Provide at least one outside reference cited using APA formatting. This reference cannot be the textbook. You are welcome to use the textbook as a reference, but it must be in addition to a separate outside reference.

https://www.hillsbar.com/About%20HCBA/HCBAPurpose.aspx
Please search through the entire website for information concerning the Hillsborough County Bar Association. The idea on how this paper should be written is important to the following instruction above. Now, I am not majoring in Para legalism. The writer must write this paper as if he or she was in Tampa Florida visiting the Bar Association. The website will play as a visual role for the writer, this paper should reflect the history of the legal system, Paralegal, etc just as it states above. The first link shown above is a monthly magazine called, “Lawyer”. It will help the writer see what HCBA is all about. Whatever the writer writes, I will have to reflection the information also on PPT. Please follow the instruction about. I do prefer the writer to have a legal background if possible.
Please insert this paragraph in the paper:
As I walked into the facility, the history structure presented a lifelong enrichment of service to the legal system. I notice on the walls of interior, enlistment of lawyers who have come and gone through the bar association. I read about the impressions they left on how future lawyers should ethically govern themselves when practicing justice system. This was very interesting. I never would have thought in a day of my life that I would be stepping into a place where I thought I know more about, but then again, I was wrong.
I met with Mr. John F. Kynes, executive director of the Hillsborough County Bar Association, located at 1610 N. Tampa Street, Tampa, Florida 33602. As I interview the Executive Director, he indicated to me that the Bar Association holds a 3700 membership organization with its membership structure out to form 30 committees. (Please add more information)

Please have the writer write the paper in first person. I prefer to have someone that has a Law study background. I just want to remind the writer that this paper is critical to my passing. Please pay close attention to the requirements.
