The father in “The Best Daddy” by Shel Silverstein is a jokester, but loves his daughter. He is a bit dramatic; bringing her out to the barn with her eyes closed, and seems like a cruel person when he says he got her a [dead] pony for her birthday. Shooting a pony doesn’t seem like something you’d normally joke about with a 13-year-old girl. After  he yells “Birthday Fools” he gives her three chances to guess what is under the blanket, and when she guesses wrong, he jokes about how her sister, “big fat Cathy”, is hiding under the blanket. It doesn’t seem nice to call a daughter “big fat Cathy” which could hint he likes this daughter better. After giving her three more guesses, he tells her it’s a red Honda motorcycle under the blanket. At first, he starts out very joking, but calms down and feels bad he is “cruel and ruining her birthday”. The father’s goal is to poke fun at his daughter, and by seeing her reaction at the end, I don’t think he would have joked with her about those things if they did not have a close bond. He seems to know his daughter well enough to know what would really, truly upset her.

The daughter in “The Best Daddy” is a gullible 13-year-old girl. At first, she thinks her dad got her a pony (every little girl’s wish) for her birthday, but then finds out he shot the pony for biting him and totally believes him. After a while, she realizes he is probably joking, and starts joking with him that she’d “ride him bareback through the grey mountains” and she’d “sneak out late at night” to see him in the pasture. This confuses the father at first, but then he realizes she is playing along with him. Since she can make up a story so easily, I think she probably gets it from her dad, since we witness both of them make up believable stories to trick the other. By the end, the daughter is just getting tired of the jokes from her dad and has to tell him he’s ruining her birthday. After he finally tells her it’s a motorcycle, all is forgiven and she kisses him. I tend to laugh both with and at the daughter since she can make her own jokes, but she also fell for the story that her dad shot her sister and the pony. There is a slight change in character throughout, because she goes from being excited, to annoyed, to happy.

The elements of comedy in “Breakfast at the Track” come mostly from the personalities of the characters. They are a husband and wife that have differences in opinion primarily about sleeping patterns, but also about everyday tasks and events. The husband takes a very close attention to detail regarding time and activities, especially with his wife’s patterns. This attention to detail is almost used as a weapon so that he can make himself look good while pointing out others faults. He is what many would refer to as a “know it all”.

The wife on the other hand is easily annoyed and exaggerates a lot. She does not like to be bothered, especially by her husband, and doesn’t understand all of his tendencies. The main issue at hand regarding sleep patterns causes her particular stress, because while she is trying to relax on vacation, her husband is trying to hold them to a schedule that he claims she has agreed to. This is the primary event that comedy comes from in the play in addition to the character personalities.

One may sympathize with either personality depending on which they are closer to, but when looked at objectively, both husband and wife have their faults that make them seem a little ridiculous. The play is funny because it takes a somewhat simple confrontation between a couple, and emphasizes the weak points of argument. When one sees that both characters could learn to adjust to each other a little more is when it really becomes funny. The whole of the argument is just so ridiculous and unnecessary, because they never actually find a solution to their problems and start all over in the end. The play takes the common assumption that all couples fight and attempts to point out just how silly most of these arguments are and that they can be avoided.

Part 4 (use article “ breakfast at the track “)

This assignment asks that you choose a live theatre performance to attend with the intention of analyzing it and then writing a review/evaluation of the performance. Yes, that means you have to attend a play, of your choice, and then write an analytical 3-4 page paper evaluating it (writing a review of it). In your paper, you need to include:

  • The name of the play, its writer(s), the director, the date of the production, and the location of the theatre (or space) where you saw it
  • A brief plot summary so that a reader who hasn’t seen the play will understand the general elements of the plot
  • An analytical evaluation of how well and to what extent the setting, props, music, lighting, and sound effects work together cohesively
  • An analytical evaluation of the acting, dialogue, and directing
  • A discussion of the theme(s) of the play and how those themes were developed
  • A judgment or recommendation – would you recommend others see this play? Who, specifically, might enjoy it? Who might it not be appropriate for? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the production? (Don’t forget to have reasons and specific examples for why you’re making the judgment you are!)

 

Please write your paper in standard academic essay format, including an introduction and conclusion. You will need detailed examples from the play to support your analysis and assertions, so be sure to take a notebook and take very detailed notes during the performance (but please be discreet).

 

Given that this is a critique/review paper, you’ll be putting in your evaluation of the play, which will involve a degree of your educated opinion, but it should be grounded in analysis not personal preference. For example, if you don’t happen to like children, and the play you viewed had children in it, you can’t claim it was a poorly executed play. However, you could say that you felt the pacing of the script was too slow in places and that the pacing caused the play to drag in parts that didn’t support the theme. Or, you could claim that the child actor in the play was a poor choice because he delivered his lines in a stilted fashion that drew attention to the fact that he was acting, which ruined the few scenes he was in. Whatever your evaluation is of the play, you have to use detailed examples from the play to support your ideas (and be very specific).

In order to find a theatre performance to attend, you’ll need to look, well in advance, at your local newspaper and theatre guides.

If you live outside of Seattle, you’ll need to look online or in the newspaper at the theatre schedule where you live. Any theatre production will do, so local community theatres done in schools, churches and community centers, as well as large-scale professional productions are all possibilities. You have all quarter to find and attend a performance, so “I couldn’t find a production to attend!” isn’t an excuse. Most theatres give deep discounts to students, so check with the theatre before paying full-price. You’ll likely need your Student ID card, so again, plan in advance to come to NSCC and get your ID made if you don’t have one already. You might want to see if other students in the class are interested in attending a performance together, as a group.
