Select a country with which the United States does business, and research what it takes for a U.S. company to do business there. Based on your research, write a report of approximately 1100 words that examines the following:
• Business norms: How should a U.S. company approach a business in this country? What kind of negotiation process takes place, and how long does it take? What kind of contract specifications do businesses in this country prefer? How would you expect a negotiated contract to be executed?
• Cultural expectations: How should individuals from the two countries interact with each other? Is the culture low-context or high-context (see Business Communication)? Are there any particular customs or rituals you should be prepared to observe? What are the table manners in the country? (Note: Business is often conducted over meals.) How are businesswomen regarded in the country, and does the country expect U.S. businesswomen to adapt in any way? If so, how? If you are a woman, would you be willing to make the adaptations? Why or why not?
• Ethical considerations: Are there differences in business ethics between the United States and the country? If so, what impact are such differences likely to have on your dealings with businesses in the country?
As suggested in this week’s lecture, your posture should be one of respect. For the most part, you should be prepared to adhere to the business and cultural norms of the other nation. However, there may be instances where firmly-held social, religious and ethical beliefs (yours or theirs) may give you pause. For example, businesses in some nations may use child labor or prohibit women from participating in business negotiations. Some governments may indulge in repressive religious or political practices.
These are legitimate concerns, and you should address them. If you select a country you come to find problematic, then simply address the problems as you see them. If you find you simply cannot in good conscience recommend conducting business in that country, then for the most part that is your prerogative. Use good judgment. For example, do not necessarily decline to do business in a particular country if businesses there prefer more formal attire than is required in your own workplace. On the other hand, if there is “reasonable cause” to avoid doing business in a particular country, then you are free to write about the country from that perspective. However, you will still need to prepare a thorough report that accurately articulates business conditions in the nation on which you are conducting research.
Include at least three sources in your report, two of which must be from substantial scholarly or professional sources dealing with international business and/or your selected country. These include books, journal articles, government websites and publications, technical manuals, and the like. The scholarly/professional sources must be at least 2000 words in length and must be prepared by someone with specialized knowledge of the subject. Your other sources may include intelligent popular articles, interviews, documentaries, and so forth. Avoid junk sites and articles too short or general in nature. Accessing appropriate outside sources will be discussed in class. Be sure to correctly document all sources cited in your paper and prepare a references list according to APA style.

Your report must be typed or word processed in essay format, be double-spaced, have one-inch margins, and be printed on white or cream paper. The report should be professional in both content and appearance. Prepare a standard APA style cover page, and fasten the pages together adequately if you do not put them in a folder. Illustrations and graphs are nice touches but optional for this assignment.
Note that the report uses single-spacing within paragraphs and double-spacing between paragraphs. Also plan to divide the body of your report into subcategories, as shown in the example, and use subheadings as appropriate.

Stating a Position Essay

A pattern to follow:

I. State your thesis directly. This does not need to be especially long, but it should set forth the primary view you have.

II. State the issue as you understand it. Be careful here to avoid the lazy path that says something like, “All who are for gun control just want to stop hunting.” That is not true on many different levels. You need to delve into the issue at length, show the extent of it, frame the discussion of it, and carve away that which does not pertain to the discussion.

III. Offer your position or your stance on the issue, and offer your reasoning for that position. Be clear here. Not everyone understands what you do, and you need to draw a picture clearly for others to follow. Once you do that, you can persuade others along your path, which is the point of persuasion. Be as concrete as possible, and offer examples from the real world whenever they demonstrate just what you mean. The concrete illustrates the abstract.

IV. Advantages–give the real world, concrete advantages your position has over any other position.

V. Disadvantages–show what limitations your view might have and reasons why we should accept those. Really, this is not as difficult as it seems. If the advantages are so great, the disadvantages might be slight or be overcome by the advantages.

As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to attend a “cultural event” and report on your experience.

1.Visit a museum or gallery exhibition or attend a theater, dance, or musical performance before the end of Week 10.

Visiting a Museum

•It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what there is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
•If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
•Make notes as you go through the museum and accept any handouts or pamphlets that the museum staff gives you. While you should not quote anything from the printed material when you do your report, the handouts may help to refresh your memory later.
•The quality of your experience is not measured by the amount of time you spend in the galleries or the number of works of art that you actually see. The most rewarding experiences can come from finding one or two (1 or 2) pieces of art or exhibits which intrigue you and then considering those works in leisurely contemplation. Most museums even have benches where you can sit and study a particular piece.
•If you are having a difficult time deciding which pieces to write about, ask yourself these questions: (1) If the museum you are visiting suddenly caught fire, which two (2) pieces of art or exhibits would you most want to see saved from the fire? (2) Why would you choose those two (2) particular pieces?
Attending a Performance

•Check your local colleges to see if there are any free or low-cost performances or student recitals. Student performances are generally of almost the same quality as professional performances, but typically cost much less.
•Unlike visiting a museum, where you can wear almost anything, people attending performances are often expected to “dress up” a bit.
•Take a pen or pencil with you and accept the program you are offered by the usher; you will probably want to make notes on it during or after the performance.
•Turn off your cell phone before entering the auditorium. Do not use your phone to record the music or to take pictures or videos. To play it safe, turn the phone off.
•Most long musical performances have at least one (1) intermission. If the lights start blinking, it is a sign that the performance is about to begin.
•Look for very specific things (such as a particular piece of music or the way certain instruments sounded at a specific time) which tend to stand out as either enjoyable or not enjoyable. Be sure to make notes of the things which you find enjoyable as well as the things which are not enjoyable.
