Read “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez).

Read “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez). Reflect and respond to the story with a reader-response essay. Remember that reader-response essays are less formal than other types of academic writing. You may use the personal pronoun “I” and may write about whatever strikes you from the story. You may also choose to write from one of the following prompts:
1. Explain how good and evil co-exist in this story, and which one you think wins out in the end. Use specific lines of text from the story to support your assertion.
2. Was the old man with the enormous wings truly an angel? Why or why not? Use specific lines of text from the story to support your assertion.
3. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is said to have fathered the genre of “magical realism” with this story. What parts of the story felt magical to you and what parts felt real? How do they work together to convey the overall message of the story? Use specific lines of text from the story to support your assertion.
4. Does the fact that Marquez is a South American writer have any influence on the developments of this story? Does its international setting have any impact on the reader’s potential understanding of the story?
For a successful paper:
• Have a strong thesis statement at the end of your introduction paragraph.
• Use a “hook” in the introduction paragraph to grab your readers’ attentions.
• Use specific textual support from the short story in the body of your paper.
• Finish with a strong conclusion that summarizes your main points, restates the thesis in some way, and possibly returns to the initial “hook”.
• Proofread for errors in spelling, grammar and writing mechanics. Vary sentence structure and sentence length to add interest.

Immigration Reform in the U.S

PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW AS THEY ARE DIRECTLY FROM THE PROFESSOR!

The following information should prove useful as you prepare to consider the development and presentation of your research paper.

The paper must be submitted in APA or MLA format using Times New Roman Font, 12 pitch, double spaced, and using 1” margins.

A well written paper is the foundation of an effective, logically developed presentation. In considering your paper keep the following in mind:

1. Accuracy – report facts accurately and objectively. Cite your sources for such information.
2. Completeness – you need not include every detail you can find on the subject; rather, present all the information essential for your audience to understand the issue or discussion better.
3. Clarify – a simple, definite organization, based on a central idea and clearly thought progression, promote clarity.
4. Attention-holding – maintaining attention sometimes is difficult because technical data often lack the power to command attention. Use interesting illustrative materials to convey your point.
5. Collecting data – you will not be limited in the types of data that you may use. All of the following are acceptable.
a. Personal experiences
b. Files, reports, observations
c. Internet based information – note, however, that “cut and paste” narratives in papers often is transparent and will hurt your paper’s final grade.
d. Personal interviews with experts
e. Print sources – of all types, especially peer reviewed journals.

If I have a bias regarding the collection of information it is one that encourages the inclusion of recent peer reviewed journal citations. Research that ignores professional research journals immediately stands out and will work against the author. I recommend that each student conduct a thorough review of the research literature. This search can be enhanced through the utilization of library databases. Consultation with a resource librarian is recommended.

6. Citations – it is my preference that you use something similar to APA or MLA format when citing your references.
7. Proofreading – poorly written papers work against a well researched effort. Spelling errors, poor grammar and awkward sentence structures detract from the end product. Adjustment to one’s grade will be made based on such flaws. My best advice – have a trusted friend proof your paper prior to its submission. Moreover, make corrections and reprint the paper prior to the submission of the final copy.
8. Finally, consider using headers to separate content themes. This helps reduce reader fatigue and often provides a more informative presentation.

language learning and/or maintenance

Prepare an essay of 750-1000 words (approximately 3-4 pages) on a topic related to language learning and/or maintenance. Choose one of the two topics or, if you wish, include both in your essay.
•&νβσπ; Attitudes towards the maintenance of immigrants languages and cultures ( interview recent immigrants)
•&νβσπ; Attitudes towards learning a language and a new identity ( interview recent immigrants)
You can work with another student or in a small group to conduct research outside of class for this essay. You can interview your family members, members of the community or your peers from the university or high school. As you know, individuals who belong to different age groups have different attitudes towards maintenance of the heritage language and culture and also towards acquiring the language of the host country. This means that your data will be varied if your interviewees are from different age groups and represent both genders. Be very sensitive when asking culture-related questions.
Some sample topic sentences are:
Older immigrants find it very difficult to learn English after they arrive in Canada.
Children under the age of 12 are usually happy to learn English and communicate in their new language.
Immigrant women who do not work outside the house have less motivation to learn English than their spouses.
Young immigrants who have arrived between the ages of 14 and 17 find learning English absolutely necessary fro their future life in Canada.

Your essay should have 3-6 body paragraphs; you should edit and revise your draft several times, paying attention to development of the thesis and topic sentences, coherence of the paragraphs, tense and voice consistency, subject/verb agreement, parallelism, modification etc.
Strategies to help you write better:
Remember that a well-written thesis statement in an argumentative essay:

Is usually one sentence somewhere in your introductory paragraph (often at the end) presenting your complete argument to the reader
Expresses an opinion and three major points supporting this opinion
Is very specific (and not vague or too general)
Gives the reader a sense of how the paper will be organized

When you reread your writing, you can use these questions to help focus your editing:
Are my main points clearly outlined in my topic sentences?
Are my ideas presented logically with my main points first?
Are my ideas and paragraphs connected together – using connecting words/phrases (For example: As a result, In addition, etc.)
Does every paragraph focus on one main point or topic in my argument?
Are my main points supported by concise and rich examples/details?
Is my writing clear, grammatically correct and understandable?
Do I use parallelism to reinforce points?
Does my concluding paragraph leave the reader thinking about the importance of my discussion?
