Response To Readings

To substitute for a quiz grade, you can write a response paper based on the day’s reading. Your response papers should be no fewer than three pages in order to receive full credit, and it is an all or nothing proposition. Please type in 12 point font, double-space, with margins no larger than 1 inch. Again, make sure you have at least three pages, not 2 ½ or 2 ¾.
You are allowed to submit no more than one response paper per week for a total of five for the semester. At the end of the semester, I will count up your response papers and apply that number against your lowest quiz grades. In other words, I will drop the lowest quiz scores. For more details on what and how to write a response paper, keep reading:
In your responses, you should address one or more of the discussion questions I post in the folders on Blackboard. Or you can choose to address your own set of questions/issues. Your prose need not be highly developed and sophisticated. I don’t expect you to present a treatise on the text. Think about these more as journal entries. You write down your thoughts, feelings, any questions the texts create in your mind. Maybe there’s a really great passage that strikes you for some particular reason. You can discuss the passage. What is its relationship to the text as a whole? What theme does it emphasize? What does it reveal about the writer/culture/genre/America? Maybe you note similarities between the week’s readings and a text we discussed in a previous week. Your response paper could be a compare/contrast. If you don’t know what to write about in any given week, you can’t go wrong if you simply respond to the discussion questions. DO NOT, however, merely write a summary of the texts. I am going to assume you have read the text, and you should feel free to make the same assumption about me. Therefore, a plot summary is superfluous and prevents you from showcasing your own thoughts, feelings, engagement with the text. You are allowed, however, to quote from the text. Just be careful that the quotes don’t “pad” or inflate your three-page minimum. The quotes should have a purpose and should be no more than half a page (in total) of your three-page response.
I won’t accept late response papers. Also, I won’t grade the quality of your thoughts/writing, except to ensure that the response is coherent and readable. You will earn a check+ (meaning full credit) or a minus (meaning no credit, which happens if you submit a response that is fewer than three pages, incoherent, or largely summary information.).

The Obligation to Endure

Analyze the essay: what are its sections, main points, pattern of development, and conclusion. Discuss its points. Be specific. Give examples and details. Cite and explain phrases and ideas from the work, especially the use of logic, emotion, and ethics as methods to convince the reader.

Do not just retell the essay! This is — Not — a summary.
More clearer instructions will be attached in a document.

Cigarette smoking

This essay should be between 900 and 1000 words. It must include a cover letter and an annotated bibliography
First, you will choose a topic of interest. Then, you need to research that topic in order to specify the topic’s scope, so it can be easily discussed in a shorter, 900 word essay. For this essay, make sure that you choose a topic with two opposing sides.
The following overused topics may not be used in your essay:
· abortion
· capital punishment
· gay marriage
· gays in the military
· mandatory drug testing

· euthanasia

· childhood obesity

· women in the military

This essay must include a minimum of five sources. Three should from the APUS databases. You may use eBooks; however, as discussed earlier this semester, books generally are not as current as peer-reviewed articles. You may also use primary sources (interviews, statistics, etc); however, these primary sources should be obtained from experts within that field. If you cannot find strong sources for your chosen topic, then change your topic. If you have a question about the validity of a source, please email me, or post your question to the open forum.
Make sure to include the following sections in your essay:

1. Introduction and claim.
2. Background.
3. Body.
4. Conclusion.
Within the body of your Rogerian essay, make sure to include the following in any order:

· The background for your chosen topic.
· The opposition – use an academic tone, and do not show bias.
· The strengths and weaknesses of your opponents claim.
· Your claim – use an academic tone, and do not show bias.
· Discuss the warrants for your claim and the opposition in order to find the common ground.
· Show the common ground between your opponents claim and your claim.
After you have written your essay, please make sure to revise the content of your essay. Lastly, be sure to edit your essay by checking grammar, format, and smaller technical details. Please make sure your essay is written in third person.

The Cover Letter

Each essay due in this course needs to have a cover letter (not a cover page). In letter for the Rogerian essay, I would like for you to answer the following questions. Each response should be one paragraph (at least three sentences), with the exception of question six. You may use first person in your cover letter. The questions are below:

1) What was the purpose of the essay? In your response, explore the deeper meaning of this question. The goal is not just to complete the assignment but instead to convey a message. What do you plan to accomplish with this essay? What do you hope the reader takes away from this argument?

2) What did you learn from completing this assignment? Did you experience a new understanding of the topic? Did you change your perspective after completing the research?

3) What difficulties did you encounter during the research, writing, or editing phases of the assignment?

4) What did you enjoy about this assignment?

5) What made you decide to write about this particular topic? Is this a topic that you are discussing in another course? Is this a topic that concerns you in particular?

6) Is there anything else you would like for me to know before reading your essay?

The Annotated Bibliography

An annotated Bibliography (AB) is due with your Rogerian essay. Using the MLA guide, list each source as it will appear on the Works Cited page of your essay. In two to three sentences summarize the text. I will be checking for grammar as well. This is what makes it an “annotated” bibliography. A sample is shown below.

Annotated Bibliography

Clark, Irene L. The Genre of Argument. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1998. Print.

Clark’s textbook identifies the major steps to developing a well-researched and well-written argumentative essay. Professional essays are included in the text as models.

Ward, Russ. Logical Argument in the Research Paper. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1997. Print.

Augmenting the steps to writing an argumentative research paper is information about proper documentation. The Toulmin System, an important aspect of a well-planned paper, should be studied carefully.
