The silicon valley

Class topic: Late 20th Century United States
Class Hist 107 : Comparing capitalist systems
Essay topic : The silicon valley
Term paper and presentation:
The major writing assignment is a 12 – 15 page research paper. Much of this course will be spent examining the evolution of capitalism in different places around the world. For your term paper, I would like you to continue this project. You are to look at some entity and describe its economic system and consider how it has evolved and changed. I use the term “entity” deliberately, because you may choose to look at any of a wide range of places and things. Obvious choices include nation states, but regions, provinces, states, and cities are also valid units of study, as are groups of people, economic movements, corporations, governmental and non-governmental organizations. Follow your own interests, but you are also strongly encouraged to discuss possible topics with me. You may not write a paper about your “home,” country, but writing about a topic related to your target language is permitted, but by no means required. Your paper should be connected in some way to the subject of a class topic or discussion, very broadly construed, in this course. The paper will therefore be due on the date the related class subject is assigned for class, and each student will give a 5 – 8 minute oral presentation on that day, illustrated by a Power Point or similar presentation, setting forth his or her findings. You must either meet with me, or send me a copy of your Power Point, two days before your presentation, so that we may co-ordinate your talk with my lecture. It is your responsibility to make sure this happens and I will deduct at least one point off the final grade of this project if it does not. There are no exceptions to this rule.
No more than three students may present on any given day and paper topic dates will be assigned based upon the order in which I receive notice of your proposed topic. Date assignments will be strictly on a first come basis and late choosers may be forced to give papers on topics or dates that were not their first choice! You should select a topic in writing by September 22, at the very latest, for my approval. Your proposal need not be very detailed but should try and define your topic with some specificity. I would also like to meet with you individually to discuss your paper after you have begun your research and will send out a sign-up sheet in the middle of October to select a meeting time.

Some thoughts on your paper
An important part of this paper will be writing about your subject from a historical perspective. History looks at why things are they way they are, and seeks to find that answer in the process of change over a period of time. Your essay should attempt to the same thing. Consider the larger historical context and think about how your topic relates to trends and events occurring elsewhere in the world. Try to relate your subject to the various themes of this course. Think, for example, about the development of capitalist market institutions or the causes of economic growth and market formation. Consider, perhaps, the tension between economic freedom of choice and the need for regulation and controls, either governmental or social, to direct economic choice towards perceived goals.
Lastly because of time limitations on presentations, which will be very strictly enforced, your presentation should not be restatement of your paper. It should omit most background and focus on the relationship of your topic to the day’s subject and the larger themes of the course.

Some thoughts to improve your essays:
Your essay must have an argument, a point of view, a thesis! What questions are you trying to answer? What point are you trying to make? Think about why you are telling us this.
Your essay should have a focused, limited topic. Pick a topic that you can handle in a relatively short paper. Focus on something specific. Everything you write should logically relate to your thesis.
Your paper should reflect research and evidence, not your opinions. Its needs to be logically argued and supported by appropriate data and substantiation
