Final Project

Overview

In this assignment you will put all the pieces together and mirror all the processes you have learned through the term.

Choose your own problem to solve. This may be any problem where people interact with computers. It must be an existing interface and not a change in organizational structures such as altering the way a department shares its work among members.
Define the user population
Formulate a design solution
Implement this design in prototype form
Test your work with users
Rinse and repeat… (Acknowledging the iterative nature of this process)
The deliverable for this assignment is a ten-page report detailing the methods you used, what you learned, and a sample of the artifact that you tested. Post this assignment in the Final Project dropbox. This is not a forum post, and you are not commenting on classmates’ work.

Assignment Rubric

(Based upon the assignment outlined above)

20 points – Displays obvious mastery of the learning concepts addressed in the assignment. The design problem and user population are well defined. The design solution and prototype are clear and address the design problem. The report is between 10 and 15 pages including images and a polished artifact. The design method includes evaluation, design and implementation. The iterative nature of design is addressed. The paper clearly describes the lessons learned.

17 – Displays good mastery of the learning concepts addressed in the assignment. The design problem and user population are defined. The design solution and prototype address the design problem. Report is at least 10 pages including images. The design method mentions but may not cover in detail evaluation, design and implementation. The iterative nature of design may or may not be addressed. The paper describes the lessons learned.

15 – Displays mastery of some of the learning concepts addressed in the assignment. The design problem is defined but the user population may not be. The design solution and prototype are vague and may or may not address the design problem. Report is at least 5 pages including images. The design method may or may not mention evaluation, design and implementation. The iterative nature of design is not addressed. The paper may or may not describe the lessons learned.

12 – Displays no mastery of the learning concepts addressed in the assignment. The design problem and user population are not well defined. Includes either a design solution or a prototype, which are vague and may not address the design problem. The report may be less than 5 pages and include no images. The design method may only mention one aspect of evaluation, design and implementation. The iterative nature of design is not addressed. The paper does not describe the lessons learned.

10 – All portions of the assignment were submitted, but the submission doesn’t address substantial concepts from the assignment.

5 – Something was submitted but incompletely and mostly flawed.

ASL Research Paper

Research Paper:
Students are responsible for submitting an original research paper consisting of 5-7 pages of typed text. At least 4-5 pages should be dedicated to scholarly research and 1-2 pages should focus on the Academic Service Learning project described above. Students may not use any paper previously submitted in another class. The paper must not be a mere compilation of facts and there must be a clear thesis.
Topic: The research paper topic should investigate and examine any contemporary sociological concern. Topics and issues with developments over the last 50 years are preferred.
The research paper is a sociology paper, not a history paper. The research paper should employ appropriate methods of research and reflect the real effect of individual or societal actions on social groups today. It should address how theoretical aspects of sociology as discussed in class and in the assigned text or readings directly relate to the topic at hand. Limited historical context is helpful for background purposes, but research and analysis must be focused and current. Research does not consist of simply collecting and repeating the work of others. Research is not a collection of facts. The purpose of the research paper is for the student to interpret and analyze sociological issues, making relative points and including their own personal opinion and analysis with reference to and support from scholarly materials. Answer the “Why” question (e.g. Why, after considerable research, do you think a sociological issue is so?).
A sufficient number of sources (at least 5-7) should be utilized to indicate satisfactory research. Be certain that you employ sufficient contemporary sources to assure that your research is current. These sources may include some or all of the following: (a) primary source materials or government or other documents, (b) scholarly books, (c) scholarly journals, (d) general readership books and magazines, (e) newspapers and the Internet, (f) interviews. Primary sources and scholarly works published in recent years should receive greater emphasis than other sources. All sources must be cited on a “References” page. Be mindful of wikis, blogs, and other often unverifiable or questionable information.
Identify the sources of: quotations, statistics, theories, ideas, concepts, etc. Provide evidence to support all assertions. If you begin a sentence with phrases like: “Experts say” or “Many people believe,” you must indicate the source(s) of your information. Do not generalize your own views and/or biases without supporting evidence. When in doubt, cite sources!
This section should include separate sections for scholarly books, journal articles, government documents, newspapers, and Internet source material.
Factors taken into consideration in the grading of this paper include, but are not limited to, such items as the depth and breadth of analysis, quality and quantity of course material, accuracy of findings, and originality of research. In addition to the content of the paper, the student is responsible for appropriate grammar, spelling, neatness, etc. Any paper with excessive misspellings, incorrect format,

References: Content:
poor grammar or other style shortcoming will be reflected in the final grade. Contractions (e.g. can’t, don’t) must never be utilized.

Psychology

Think about your current developmental stage (emerging adulthood, adulthood or late adulthood), and after serious critical and thoughtful analysis, please respond to the following:

Discuss how the 3 domains (biosocial, cognitive and psychosocial) converge during this period of development, paying particular attention to the following:
Body/physical image
health and vitality
decision-making and risk-taking
self-concept
emotionality
relationships, intimacy, social networks
importance of school, academic engagement, family, work, and community
morals, values, and religion

Please also include in your discussion how your relationships with parents, children, partners and spouses, as well as cohort and peer group interactions have formed and impacted your development up to this point in your life.

To what degree have you noticed a shift in your values and opinions about social norms and issues from earlier developmental stages to now (i.e. abortion, sexuality, religiosity, biases, stereotypes and stereotype threats)? Have you experienced a change in your health habits with age? Have there also been changes with respect to your analytical, creative and practical intelligence? To what extent has your problem solving and decision-making become more (or less) flexible as you’ve aged? How has the quality and quantity of your relationships changed?

What are/were some of the key challenges during this developmental period and how were they resolved?
This paper is worth 50 extra credit points and can take the place of one exam score if you decide to complete it. It is not required—it’s extra credit. This reaction paper should:

follow APA format in style and include a cover page (https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/). You don’t need an abstract.
contain narrative that is at least 3 pages and no more than 4 pages
be free of typos, grammar, punctuation and all other writing errors
answer each of the 4 questions posed above (spend roughly one page for each of the 4 areas)
be edited and proof-read prior to submission
include the references and sources (other than your textbook) if used on a separate APA style Reference Page. However, you are not required to use outside references. This is about you and your developmental growth, transitions, and challenges.
be submitted via the Etudes online submission process no later than Tuesday, December 2, 2014 before 11:59 PM.

This should be a fun assignment that demonstrates that you have carefully read the relevant parts of chapters on your specific developmental period, synthesized the readings and applied these concepts to your own personal developmental period.

Case Study: Small Business Owner to Customer—You’re Fired!

As the owner of WebTastic, a small business that designs and hosts websites, you value your clients and understand that the recession has affected everyone. But lately you’ve realized that some clients are sapping your business’s already stretched resources. One of your first patrons—Minnie MacElroy of Minnie’s Miniscule Miniatures—has been a demanding client from the get-go. She asked for changes to the site design she had already approved, forcing you to put in more hours than your quote covered. Once the site went live, Minnie consistently badgered you to make other changes so often that you did them without charge just to get her off your back. When her monthly hosting fee started becoming erratic, you agreed to let her slide until her business picked up. But now she’s six months delinquent.

Despite repeated phone calls and several letters asking her to make a payment, you have received nothing. As a business owner, you understand how difficult it is to keep your doors open. You have had to lay off your best Web designer and are now doing your own bookkeeping instead of paying for that service. The contract MacElroy signed has a provision that if an account remains unpaid, WebTastic may opt to render the site nonfunctional. The contract also states that WebTastic retains the copyright on the design of any site it has created. While you are hesitant to lose any business in this economic climate, you have decided that some clients are more trouble than they are worth, and that if MacElroy doesn’t begin paying the money she owes you, you will exercise your option of closing her site.

Write a letter informing Minnie that you are closing down her site if she does not pay the money she owes you. Should you fully explain that she has been a difficult customer, or should you rely on her lack of payment as your reason for breaking the contract? Address your letter to Ms. Minnie MacElroy, 27694 Bay Point Lane, Bonita Springs, FL 34134.

MULTI-SOURCE ACADEMIC WRITING

Write a well-organized and well-supported essay with an original thesis based on the five readings and one video for Module 3. The essay must include no less than SIX citations from these readings and/or video.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be an explanation of the “me” society we live in today. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay.

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.

This essay must include no less than SIX citations from these readings and/or video. Citations are to be a combination of direct quotations and paraphrased quotations with or without the author’s name. No others sources are to be used for this assignment.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. In this case, where do we go from here?

The essay must also include a Reference List that includes the readings and/or video quoted in the essay.

Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 3 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English.

Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch margins.

The first person “I” is not used in a formal essay, nor is the passive “you.” In place of “you,” “one” may be used.
